Officejet 200. I replaced the black cartridge, but after replacing the cartridge, I am now getting a message that there is a problem with my color cartridge, Removing and reinstalling it does not help. Colors were printing fine prior to replacing the black cartridge. Rebooting the printer does not help.

Is there a way to have the printer ignore the color cartridge and print black only? I went into settings and selected "print black ink only". No help there.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi @ronzooktaha55,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 200 is having trouble recognizing the color cartridge after replacing the black one, even though the colors were previously printing fine. Here's how you can troubleshoot this issue and check if it's possible to print with only the black cartridge:

Check the Color Cartridge:

  • Inspect for Damage or Leaks: Remove the color cartridge and carefully inspect it for any visible damage, ink leaks, or debris on the contacts. Clean the copper contacts gently with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert Firmly: Reinsert the color cartridge, ensuring it clicks into place securely.

Reset the Printer:

  • Power Reset: With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer. Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

Clean the Contacts:

  • Use the printer’s built-in maintenance settings to clean the cartridge contacts from the settings menu on the printer or from the HP Smart app.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure the printer firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP Support website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve cartridge recognition issues.

Print Black Only:

  • Change Print Settings: In your computer’s print dialog box, go to Printer Properties or Preferences and set the print mode to Black & White or Grayscale.
  • Printer Control Panel: On some printers, selecting "Print in Black Only" under settings might not override cartridge errors. However, double-check by navigating to Settings > Print Settings to confirm the mode is set correctly.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @ronzooktaha55 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Bypass Cartridge Error (If Possible):

  • Unfortunately, most HP printers require all cartridges to be functioning properly to print, even in black-only mode. Some older models or specific settings may allow bypassing this, but the OfficeJet 200 typically does not have this capability due to cartridge verification checks.

Try a Different Color Cartridge:

  • If you have another color cartridge available (even if partially used), try inserting it to see if the error clears. This can help determine if the issue is with the current color cartridge.

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the cartridges you are using are the correct model for your printer (usually HP 62 or HP 62XL for the OfficeJet 200). Incorrect or incompatible cartridges can cause errors.

Unfortunately, due to firmware and design restrictions, if the printer continues to detect an issue with the color cartridge, you may not be able to bypass this error to print using only black ink.

If none of the steps resolve the issue, it might be a hardware fault with the printer’s cartridge recognition system. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
