Hi @ANDY728,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your phone suddenly stops connecting to your HP printer and throws up error code -9. Let’s walk through the steps to fix this with care and clarity.

Step-by-Step Fix for Error Code -9

1. Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

  • On most HP printers, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together until the Power button starts flashing
  • This puts the printer into Wi-Fi setup mode, ready to connect to a new network.

2. Use the Correct Wi-Fi Band

  • Make sure your phone and printer are both connected to the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.
  • HP printers often do not support 5 GHz networks.

3. Sign In to the HP Smart App First

  • Before adding the printer, sign in to your HP account in the HP Smart app.
  • Some users found that skipping this step causes error -9.

4. Update HP Smart App

  • Go to the App Store or Play Store and make sure the HP Smart app is fully updated.

5. Restart Everything

  • Restart your printerphone, and Wi-Fi router.
  • This refreshes connections and clears temporary glitches.

6. Disable Wi-Fi Direct Temporarily

  • If Wi-Fi Direct is enabled on the printer, it may interfere with setup.
  • Disable it from the printer’s control panel during Wi-Fi setup.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
