@Ken924, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
Try using the old/alternate ink cartridges if available and check if the issue persists.
Also, try single-cartridge mode. Insert only one ink cartridge in the printer and try making a copy and check if that works to identify the defective ink cartridge.
Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Clean the ink cartridges
Refer to step 5 in this document.
Print a test page
Press and hold the Cancel button for 3 seconds.
A Printer Status Report prints. Check the print quality.
Let me know how this goes.

Thanks for the suggestions - I spent the best part of a day trying every trick in the book (and web) to get the printer working but to no avail. As I can't manage without a printer I went out and bought a new HP 2622 printer, having first reclaimed the new cartridges from my old printer.
I then took the old printer back to the shop I bought it from and they gave me a full refund as the product was less than a year old. As the new printer cost less than the original I actually made a cash saving - unfortunately this won't recompense for the time and aggravation of trying to solve the issue.
