I am having the same problems with the Hold For Authentication box.  I have tried resetting my printer setting and done a factory reset on the HP OJ Pro 8740.  I can get it to print using USB connection but Wireless will not work for my computer or from a mobile device.  I running Mac Book Pro 10.11.6 and iPhone 6.  I have tried all the options out there but nothing seems to work.  I do have another iMac set up on the same network but have deleted the printer from the setting menu.

Please help I can not use the wireless printing at all.  This all started when I switched to an ORBI wireless mesh system.  I have tried every password combination in the Hold For Autentication box and nothing works.  Just comes up Guest and asks for a password.

Thank you

A warm welcome to HP Support Community!

Resetting the printer network settings, reconnecting the printer back to the network and then adding a compatible driver may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

1.) Unplug your modem/router and leave it powered off.

2.) Restart your printer, from the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, and then touch ( Setup ). Touch Network Setup. Touch Restore Network Settings.

3.) Power off your printer

4.) Reconnect your modem/router and wait for it to re-establish its internet connection.

5.) Power on your printer.

6.) On the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the Dashboard, and then touch Wireless , Touch Wireless Settings.

7) Touch Wireless Setup Wizard, and then select your network name from the list of available networks.Follow the onscreen instructions to connect the printer to your home WiFi.

Once the printer is connected, use the steps below to remove the existing printer driver and add a compatible driver:

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Select AirPrint from the Use menu

6.) Try to print.

Hello and Thank You for replying.  Unfortunately the steps you provided did not work. I tried several times following your instructions and I get the same Hold for Authentication.  The printer indicates that  it is connected to the network and it will print the network status page from the utilities box.  But any print jobs I try and send will not print.

My DSL is provided by Qwest through a Qwest ActionTec Router, I have a wired connection to the ORBI Mesh Wifi Router.  I reboot both the Action Tec and Orbi routers, Restored the network setting on the printer, Reset the Printer settings on my MacBook, Powered the printer off and back on then set up the wireless and added the print driver, But still no printing.  I did notice when setting up the print driver setting there was a AirPrint and a Secure AirPrint option.  I tryed both and neither worked.

I also looked through all of the Router Utilities and could find nothing indicating there is an Admin Password associated with the router or network.    I even ran a ethernet / network hard wire directly from the ORBI to the printer then to my MacBook and it still gives me the Hold For Authentication??  It seems I cannot print via any network connection - wired or wireless.

I have also tried resetting  the printer to Factor Settings and that did not work either.

Needless to say this is very frustrating.  The only way I can print is by connecting a USB from the printer to the computer.  I really need to print wireless.  It makes this printer pretty much useless in my situation.

Please let me know if you have any additional suggestions.

Thank You

Clicking the refresh button should give the us a chance to re-enter their credentials.

Once the enter credentials windows pops up, enter your Mac Username and Password and click OK. Please make sure that you check the box "Remember this password in my keychain"

Nope - that does not work either.   I tried muliple times and it does not even remember my info and reverts back to "guest".

Whats really frustrating is every device involved shows that the printer is connected to the network. The printer, my computer, my ORBI app, but it continue come up with HOLD FOR AUTHENTICATION dialog box.

I have gone through all of my key chain passwords, Old passwords etc. and nothing works to eliminate the HOLD FOR AUTHENTICATION BOX.

Try repairing the disc permissions, you may use the steps available here to repair disc permissions. If issue persist, then create a new user account and check if you can print from the new user account. Instructions on how to create a new user account can be found here.

Thank You again for your assistance.  Unfortunately neither of those worked.  Apples web site has the following message:

"Beginning with OS X El Capitan, system file permissions are automatically protected. It's no longer necessary to verify or repair permissions with Disk Utility."

I am running El Cap and could not repair any permissions.  I created a new account but still got the Hold For Authentication Box.

?? What now........
