Hi,

We have HP OfficeJet 8610 with the additional tray. Thus, we have Tray1 and Tray2. This is what I've read in the printer specification on how we can use the trays:

  • Have paper loaded in both trays and use paper from one tray if the other tray is empty
  • Have paper loaded in both trays and use paper from one of the trays first
  • Be able to choose from plain paper and another paper type that you use occasionally

My question is:

Let's say that we set Tray 2 as the default tray.

In MS Word or any other app in Page Setup you can set particular tray (let's say Tray 1) as Paper Source. This means that the document should be printed on paper from the selected tray (Tray 1). But in our case, the document is always printed using paper from the default tray (Tray 2).

Could you please confirm that this is the expected behavior?

Many thanks, Ana.

Hi @AnaGligorijevic,

I understand that you want to be able to print the same document to different trays and change the setting through the Word Software. This printer isn't capable of changing the tray settings for different pages within the same multiple page document.

For a workaround, you could use the setting for 'Print selected pages". Print the selected pages, then for the remaining pages select the 'Print selected pages" again and then change the tray settings from the application.

From the application, you can change the tray settings for 1 page or a multiple page document. But it will print all the pages to that tray specified.

Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Hello @AnaGligorijevic,

This is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that you would like to know how to print to the default paper tray. Thanks for providing all that detailed information. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

I believe you have to set the print driver to Auto Select. Try making these changes to see if they will help.

From Devices and Printers; right-click the printer icon, click Printing preferences.

Click the Paper/Quality tab.

Select Printer Auto Select from the Paper Source drop-down list in the Tray Selection area.

Click OK twice to close the pages and accept changes.

Tray 2 supports only plain paper.

Make sure the Tray lock isn't turned on.

You can change the behaviors using the following features:

● Default Tray: Set the default tray from which the printer draws paper first.

●Tray Lock: Lock a tray to prevent it from accidental use; for example, when you have loaded special paper (such as letterhead or preprinted paper).

The printer will not use a locked tray even when the other tray is empty.

Source: Officejet 8610.

Try printing from another application to see if you have the same results.

If you are still having issues then update the printer's firmware: HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer.

Thank you very much for your answer.

We have a situation that we want to print the same Word document from two different trays in the single print job. In MS Word you have the opportunity to select for each document section (let's say page) the specific tray. This is useful if you want to print, e.g. the last page of your invoice on the paper with the different color.

So, I don't want to use Printer Preferences, because if I do so, then the whole document will be printed from the selected tray.

I want to use Page Setup in MS Word instead, where can I set up for each page from which tray to be printed.

Please take a look at the picture:

So, my question is, if this scenario is feasible with the HP OfficeJet 8610 that has 2 Trays.

Many thanks,

Ana.

Thank you for the clear answer.

Could you please recommend an affordable HP printer with such capability (changing tray settings for different pages within the same multipage document)?

Thank you very much,

Ana

Hi @AnaGligorijevic,

I am not sure of any specific Consumer models that have this feature. You would probably need a Commercial unit. You can contact the sales department for further information.

Thanks!

Is the same the case for an Officejet Pro 8720 (That it does not support printing to two trays from 1 printjob?)
