Printing is extremely slow when using an OfficeJet Pro 8720 and Google Cloud Print. If I print to any other HP printer using Google Cloud Print it's instantaneous, but on the OfficeJet Pro 8720 it takes approximately 1-3 minutes to print a document, whether color or black & white. During the first part of the printing process when it eventually starts printing, it prints for a second or two, then stops, then prints a little more, then stops. Really disappointing for such an otherwise nice printer. It's not the fault of Google Cloud Print or the other two HP printers I have wouldn't work perfectly printing the same document.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Is the copy and printing from the computer working fine?

However, let's follow the below steps that could resolve the issue.

I suggest you do a Hard Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Assign Manual IP to the printer:

1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.

2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.

3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.

4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.

5) Go to the Network tab.

6) Click on Networking from the left pane.

7) Then click on Network Address (IP).

😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.

9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.

10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.

11) Click on Apply.

Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g

Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.

Update the firmware for the printer using this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/7902032/documen...

Restart the printer.

Try to print.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Have a great day!

Thanks Raj1788, but having spent the past 30 years in the technology industry, I've already tried these basic steps. There is nothing wrong with the printer at all when connected directly to any computer. But I've recently moved from a Mac to a Pixelbook so I'm relegated to using Google Cloud Print, and even though I fully understand there can be some printing latency when using Google Cloud Print...not as much as I'm experiencing.

It's definitely a problem with the printer as it doesn't happen with two other HP printers I have here. The LaserJet M15w prints just fine and I finally just gave up on the OfficeJet Pro 8720 and will sell it...it's too big for my desk, anyway. I bought an OfficeJet 5255 today and it also works perfectly. I miss being able to scan directly to Google Drive or print directly from Google Drive (with using an app and smartphone). But at least it has Webscan which is the next best thing.

Thanks for your help anyway, but at this point, we can close this discussion.

@Raj1788: Thanks for the private message, but I've already sold the OfficeJet 8720 to someone who will just use it as a printer on Windows so won't have to deal with Google Cloud Print.

FWIW, I bought an OfficeJet 5255 and it works perfectly with Google Cloud Print. There is no delay at all...as soon as I press the PRINT button, it's starts printing on the OfficeJet 5255. Plus, it's a LOT smaller, fits on my desk better, and isn't nearly as noisy. It's all I need and the 8720 was way more than I need. Thanks for your help.
