Hi all, I have a hp envy 4522 that I manage with a hp smart app on my android.
Recently I'm improving home security and the printer is now on its own vlan on my ubiquity network.
I tried forwarding bonjours across vlans (and I was able to see them, even connect my Linux laptop via the hplip although that's IP I suppose), but despite being able to print (if I print directly to IP) I can't get the app to register the printer!
Even when I stopped client isolation and network isolation it would register.
I'm trying to fault find and I'm looking at the app.
How does it register a printer, and store the address?
Would playing around with 'domain' help?
And why does it drop the registered printer if I move from vlan 2 to vlan 3, even if I forward bonjour and all traffic between vlans??
Grateful for any help or guidance,
Thanks

@Zillalicious, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Smart App Connection Details!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The HP Smart app is designed to simplify the management of your HP printer, including the HP Envy 4522, from your mobile device or desktop. When it comes to connecting your printer and managing it over a network, it's crucial to ensure proper network configuration.
Here are a few steps that could help you resolve the connection issue given the printer is on its own VLAN on your Ubiquity network:
Ensure Network Discovery:
- Verify that network discovery is enabled for all devices on your VLAN.
- Make sure there's no isolation preventing the devices from seeing each other on the network.
Enable Bonjour (mDNS) Across All VLANs:
- While you mentioned forwarding Bonjour across VLANs, ensure that the configuration accurately allows mDNS and the HP printer service to broadcast across the network.
Static IP Configuration:
- Assign a static IP address to your HP Envy 4522. This will help in maintaining a consistent connection, as dynamic IP changes might interrupt app recognition.
Check Firewall Settings:
- Verify your router’s firewall settings to ensure that it is not blocking any necessary ports for the HP Smart app.
Update Printer Firmware and HP Smart App:
- Make sure that your printer’s firmware and HP Smart app are both up-to-date. Firmware updates can often resolve connectivity issues.
Use the HP Smart App's Setup Process:
- Try setting up the printer again through the HP Smart app by following the in-app setup instructions, which might adapt to the new network configuration.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi, thank you for the reply, much appreciated.
Unchecking isolation, (both in-vlan client and inter vlan) bonjours *were* being captured on the family vlan (from the printer vlan).
However the smart app stubbornly refuses to register the printer despite the bonjour being communicated between vlans.
I'm becoming a little more confident that this is a multicast service visibility issue, not a routing or IP one. Does the HP Smart app requires same-subnet/multicast visibility to detect the printer?
I've tried clearing cache but no joy.
Does the app registering use the ssid or something when registering the printer into the app?
Is there a way to manually set up a printer in the app?
Thanks for all your help!

Hey @Zillalicious,
Thank you for your response
My colleague @zoey7886 is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.
Does the HP Smart app need the printer and phone on the same subnet?
Yes, the app usually relies on multicast (like Bonjour) to find the printer. It works best when the printer and phone are on the same subnet because multicast can be tricky across VLANs. You need to make sure your router is set up to forward multicast traffic between VLANs.
Does the app use SSID for registering the printer?
No, the app doesn’t use the SSID to register the printer. It uses multicast (Bonjour) to find the printer. That’s why the printer needs to broadcast its presence, and the app needs to "hear" it.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
