All Envys, Deskjets and Office Jets
Android 9.0 Pie

I am an HP Sales Rep and have tried using the HP Smart App on my Android Pie (9) 1 Plus smart phone.  The phone will connect with WiFi Direct (acknowledged by the printer) but the app does not communicate with the printer.   I have tried several different printers (Envys, Officejets, Laserjets available to me in a retail envirnment) and none of them will communicate with my phone using WiFi Direct.  This is also the case when using the Android 9 native print app. The App and the  native print software does communicate with installed printers over my WiFi network.  Any knowledge to fix this current and future incompatibility would be appreciated.

Hi,

Have you installed the HP Print Service Plugin or the Samsung Print Service plugin?

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04024231

I would also ensure that under Setting > More Settings > Printing (may vary under different operating system versions and not necessary at that exact location) ensure that only a single plugin is enabled.

Also disabling on service and enabling another one may help.

Not a Samsung Phone so no Samsung Print Service plugin. HP print  plugin is installed and enabled.

Samsung was just an example, meant to disable any other print service if a such exists, such as the Default Print Service.

Also when you say WiFi Direct, do you directly connect to the printer's WiFi Direct network or do you connect the printer to the WiFi Direct network broadcast by your Android device?

If you connect the printer to a WiFi Direct network of your 1P6t device, try connecting it to the printer's network instead:

Using the Printer's WiFi Direct. The printer and the phone acknowledge they are WiFi connected. The app does not talk to the printer. Works fine over my home wifi network.
