I have a DeskJet 4175e installed with my iPad, iMac and iPhone on the same network. When I try to print from internet or pages document etc. after selecting the printer on my devices, the selection disappears. My devices can find the printer, but printer selection will not remain for the printer function to complete. With my Mac, it seems I must use the Smart app to print anything.

Hi @Boxer49,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP DeskJet 4175e is being recognized by your iOS and macOS devices, but it disappears or fails to stay connected when attempting to print. This could be caused by several factors, including network instability, AirPrint issues, or communication problems between the devices and the printer.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.
Ensure Printer Firmware is Up-to-Date
- Make sure your DeskJet 4175e is running the latest firmware. You can check for updates using the HP Smart app or via the printer’s control panel (if it has a display).
Restart Your Printer and Network Devices
- Turn off your printer, router, and devices (iPad, iPhone, and iMac).
- Unplug your router for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow it to restart.
- Turn on your printer and wait for it to connect to the network.
- Turn on your iPhone, iPad, and iMac and try to print again.
Check Network Connection
- Make sure all devices (printer, iPhone, iPad, iMac) are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Sometimes, if you have multiple networks (e.g., a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz), they can cause communication issues.
- Ensure that your router's firewall is not blocking the printer or devices from communicating.
Reset AirPrint Connection
- On your iPad or iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and ensure you are connected to the correct network.
- Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect.
- Restart your printer and try printing again through AirPrint.
Use HP Smart App on All Devices
Since you mentioned that printing works through the HP Smart app on your Mac, try using the HP Smart app on your iPad and iPhone as well. This can often resolve issues with AirPrint:
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the App Store.
- Open the app, select your printer, and try printing directly through the app.

Remove and Reinstall Printer
If the issue persists, remove and reinstall the printer on your devices:
- On your iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > Printers > Select your printer > Forget this printer.
- Re-add the printer by going to the printing application (e.g., Safari, Pages) and selecting the printer again.
- On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Select your printer and remove it. Re-add the printer through AirPrint or the HP Smart app.
Check for AirPrint Compatibility and Reset Network Settings
- If none of the above works, try resetting network settings on your iOS devices by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all Wi-Fi connections (you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network afterward).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
