When I was a kid, we had a printer, selected print, and the page printed. Now you have to create an account, disconnect from your WiFi, connect to your printer’s WiFi, print your document, reconnect to your WiFi all while HP is trying to sell you a subscription service. They’re creating a problem to sell you the solution and it’s disgusting.

Hi @Isthisfr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear you loud and clear, and you’re not alone in feeling this way. Printing used to be simple: click “Print,” and the page came out. Today, with account requirements, Wi-Fi juggling, and subscription prompts, it can feel unnecessarily complicated and frustrating. That sense of nostalgia for the old plug-and-play experience is completely valid.

Here’s why this shift happened:

  • Cloud Printing & Mobile Integration: HP app and similar apps were introduced to enable printing from anywhere, across devices, and to support features like scanning and remote management.
  • Security & Firmware Updates: Account sign-ins help ensure secure access and firmware updates.
  • Instant Ink & Subscription Models: HP promotes these services for convenience and cost savings, but it can feel intrusive if you just want basic printing.

How to Simplify Printing Today

If you want the old-school experience (no account, no app hassle):

  1. Use Direct USB Printing
    • Connect your printer via USB to your PC or Mac.
    • Install the basic driver from HP’s site (not HP app).
    • Print directly without signing in.

  2. Disable Web Services
    • On the printer’s control panel, turn off HP Web Services.
    • This removes Instant Ink prompts and cloud features.

  3. Download Basic Drivers
    • Go to Official HP® Support.
    • Select your printer model and choose Basic Driver instead of the HP app.

  4. Set Up Wi-Fi Once
    • Use your home Wi-Fi for the printer and keep it connected.
  • Avoid switching networks by enabling Wi-Fi Direct only when needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
