Hi @goose2024,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To connect your Deskjet 2800e printer to your Surface tablet via your phone's Wi-Fi hotspot, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the connectivity issue:
Step 1: Ensure Hotspot is Active and Functional
Activate the Hotspot:
- On your phone, enable the mobile hotspot feature. This is usually found under Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & tethering (on Android) or Settings > Personal Hotspot (on iOS).
- Set a network name (SSID) and password for the hotspot.
Check Connectivity:
- Ensure other devices can connect to your phone’s hotspot to verify it is working properly.
Step 2: Connect the Printer to the Hotspot
Power on the Printer:
- Ensure your Deskjet 2800e is powered on and in range of the hotspot.
Access Wireless Setup:
- On the printer, access the wireless setup menu. This can typically be done via the printer's control panel.
- For models without a display, you might need to press and hold the Wireless button until the light starts blinking, indicating it's in setup mode.
Connect to the Hotspot:
- Follow the on-screen instructions or use the HP Smart app to connect the printer to your phone’s hotspot. You will need to enter the SSID and password of the hotspot.
Step 3: Verify Connection on the Printer
- Check Wireless Status:
- Once the printer attempts to connect, verify that it shows a solid blue wireless light, indicating a successful connection.
- If there’s an issue, the printer’s wireless light might blink or show a different pattern. Refer to the printer’s manual for specific error codes.
Step 4: Connect Surface Tablet to Hotspot
- Connect Surface Tablet:
- On your Surface tablet, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
- Find and connect to your phone’s hotspot by entering the SSID and password.
Step 5: Install Printer on Surface Tablet
Install HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store.
Add Printer:
- Open the HP Smart app and follow the prompts to add your printer.
- The app should detect the printer if both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (the hotspot).
Troubleshooting Tips
- Restart Devices:
- Restart your phone, printer, and Surface tablet to refresh network settings.
- Check Signal Strength:
- Ensure the printer is within a good range of the phone’s hotspot for a strong signal.
- Update Firmware and Drivers:
- Ensure your printer’s firmware and the HP Smart app are up to date.
- Reset Network Settings:
- As a last resort, reset the network settings on your printer and set up the connection again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
