HP ENVY Inspire 7255e All-in-One Printer
iOS

When I run AirPrint on my iPad 18.5, the Print Center says my printer is out of paper when it is not. It simply proceeds to correctly print my document. The things I've done that don't make this erroneous message go away includes: reboot printer; update iPad iOS; reinstall HP SMART; reboot iPad; and unload and reload printer tray. This message 1st popped up 2 weeks ago while receiving installation help from HP tech support over the phone. But it disappeared after successful installation - until now when the out of paper message is back again. Everything else seems to work OK w.r.t. printing from iPad. Another thing is that I cannot get Print Center to run when using "Print with HP SMART" on my iPad. HP SMART does not appear to provide any display of print status on iPad. Is this normal? The real-time status of print jobs is particularly important on iPad and other mobile devices that are a distance away from the printer.

@Phlurim, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

“Out of Paper” Error:

Make sure the paper is aligned properly and the sensor isn't blocked.

Check if there’s a firmware update for the printer.

Try resetting the printer to default settings (you’ll need to set it up again).

Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi and reconnect it.

Print Center Shows Error But Prints Fine:

Go to Settings > Printers & Scanners > Clear any stuck jobs.

If AirPrint keeps giving you errors, try printing through the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thx, but I've done all of that already - several times. I'm sufficiently tech savvy to at least know that this isn't showing anything obvious (to me). I occasionally discover that even HP's Tech Support says they don't understand some of the glitches I've experienced, which then results in numerous time consuming trial-and-error loops with them until something finally works for no apparent reason! I sometimes wonder that today's wireless, integrated h/w and s/w technologies have become too complicated for techies, let alone for casual users. The printer works very well otherwise(?)  It still prints as it normally should! It doesn't seem to matter if I print from my iMac, or from my IPad (Print/Airprint and "Print with HP SMART"). Glitches like this never seem to end on my previous two HP ENVY wireless printers over the past few years. Is anyone sure it might not spossibly be a data constant error in the embedded code, or a Python logic error, or a hack? I'm just saying! In the meantime, would you happen to know of any diagnostic tools that I could use myself that might help - perhaps even an AI tool?

Hey @Phlurim,

Thank you for the detailed context—this is clearly a frustrating issue, especially when everything functions correctly except for that persistent false "Out of Paper" message in Print Center. Let's try a few more steps:

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait for 60 seconds and connect the power cord back in.
  5. Turn on the printer.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Let me know how it goes.

Take care and have a good day.
