Welcome to the HP Community --
I'd guess the answer is "yes", you have been the victim of a scam.
The type of scam and the extent of possible trouble depends on what they did to you the first time --
HP does not sell driver software for your printer -- available software and drivers are provided free at the printer's support website in category Software & Drivers.
HP does not sneak into your computer then claim your computer if full of bugs that must be eradicated.
HP does not beg, threaten, cajole, or tell you stories about how much you need their help.
If you let rats into your computer, they perhaps planted monitoring software on your computer -- or worse.
If you have cause for concern, contact your bank --
Change any and all passwords that you feel might be vulnerable.
If the breach was severe and you worry for pictures or documents on the computer, contact your local authorities.
Talk to a friend, colleague, or family member to gain perspective of the actual event(s).
Beware of Fake Sites
The "Real Deal"
123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site
The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.
There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.
If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants to log into your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!
From HP: HP Fraud Alert: Protect Yourself from Scams, Report Suspicious Calls
Document includes links to USA and Canadian authorities to report the incident.
