Hi @lucy75,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your new Instant Ink cartridges are not being recognized by your HP OfficeJet 5742 printer, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the new cartridges are compatible with your HP OfficeJet 5742 printer. You can verify this information on the Instant Ink website or by checking the cartridge packaging.

Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Turn on your printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Wait for the carriage to move to the center of the printer.
  • Remove the new cartridges.
  • Make sure the plastic tape covering the ink nozzles is removed from the cartridges.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly until they click into place.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Wait for about 10 seconds.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware. You can check for firmware updates on the HP support website and follow the instructions to update if necessary.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and inside the carriage using a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and turn on the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord.
  • Turn on the printer.

Check for Ink Cartridge Issues:

  • Make sure there are no visible defects on the new cartridges.
  • Check the expiration date on the cartridges to ensure they are not expired.

Verify Instant Ink Subscription:

  • Ensure that your Instant Ink subscription is active and that the cartridges you received are associated with your account.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
