My system has stopped recognising my audio device for some reason - was working fine one minute then suddenly wasn't!

 

I did a BIOS update and reboot a couple of hours earlier, but audio had been working fine since then - I even watched a film.  Also, the windows sounds (beeps etc) working fine still - it's just listening to music/speech etc that's not working.

 

Error message says:  No audio output device is installed.

 

And when I do a search for problems the 'problem solver' says:  Windows has detected a problem with Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel (R) SST) Audio Controller, but it doesn't give me any clue as to why.  Suggestions very welcome because I'm completely stuck!

 

Just found something which says 

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE

 

That can't be good can it???

I have a 650 G3 that's doing the same thing.

Unsinstall / reinstall of the driver,  add / remove device.  Even performed a system recovery to a point a week back, and I still cannot get audio on the PC

Booting from a Win 10 PE USB stick, the audio did function normally, indicating an OS / SW issue, not hardware.

 

Oddly enough, as soon as I restarted from the internal HD, audio started playing normally.  No more driver or hardware issues.

Still monitoring to see if it's intermittant

Update... somehow it started working again last time, no idea what I did, it just did! But 2 days ago exactly the same thing happened again and no matter what I do it's not working. I've had the computer for less than 6 months and it's incredibly annoyimg!

Hi, having same issue with an HP Probook 650 G3. Your issues just solved themselves it sounds like? 

 

Driver updates and bios updates have not helped with this issue. Was happening pre and post BIOS update. New and old audio drivers do not resolve issue. 

 

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Well, I'm not sure what actually fixed it, if it was a firmware update, or a complete powercyle (pulling the battery and AC adapter) or just the boot from another boot device.  But some combination of those three activities resolved it, and it has not reocurred.

I had a chance to physically check this device today and found that it was connected to a docking station. 

 

I brought a Bluetooth speaker with me, and this conencted up and worked even when the audio device was showing as stopped. So this could be a fix for people who are unable to get this working. 

 

I disconnected the Bluetooth device, and uninstalled the Conexant audio program through appwiz.cpl and then removed the device and deleted the driver. 

 

-I then rebooted and selected to do a UEFI hardware component test on the "Sound". This passed OK. (You can download from HP support site under your "diagnostics"). 

 

-I then booted Hirens boot cd, and rebooted device entirely. 

 

-Let device install automatically, it prompted to reboot in Win10x64 

-rebooted twice and sound issue is resolved for now. 

 

-Will report back if issue returns.

Hello,

 

I changed my laptop to an HP Elitebook 840 G4 where the sound card, I'm assuming, is onboard. The symptoms are the same as some reported although it's related with Spotify and Browser's sound. If I pause Spotify, play something on youtube or any video from any site in using a browser - then when pressing play in Spotify again, nothing happens - Meaning no sound is coming out.

 

When this happens the audio component appears disabled and even windows identifies the problem by showing a yellow exclamation point sign and no sound whatsoever can be reproduced from the laptop speakers or headphones.

 

The "trick" that sometimes works is to disable the audio component, restart the PC, then enable the same component and sometimes the sound starts to work again. We tried to update the drivers but everything is up-to-date (windows sound drivers and HP available drivers) - sometime I have to restart or shut down the PC completely. This is just annoying.

 

Facts:

- Drivers are updated

- Discarded the problem being from Chrome, because I switched everything to Firefox and the same happens

- The component/components that end up in error are "Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) Audio Controller" & "Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) OED". Besides from what is shown in the picture attached, sometimes it gives "Windows could not initialize this component" or something like that.Capture.PNG

 

- Finally, I have Windows 10 installed and the last version available of Spotify as well as every installed browser.
