HP 14-bw000 Laptop PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laptop fell off coffee table a couple of days ago and cracked some of the plastic casing. It has subsequently worked for the next two days but today has shut down automatically and when turned back on, has come with a message "SMART Hard Disk Error".

Followed online support instructions (Enter BIOS setup utility & ensure legacy support disabled

Instructed to go to System Config> UEFI HII Configuration > Intel(R) Rapid Storage technology

but this isn't there. It says intel optane should be listed but it isn't. It then says to contact support.

Virtual agent has me open hardware diagnostics, run a component test

IT came back with Short DST check Passed, Optimised DST Check Warning and SMART Check Recommended Action executing DST.... The test logs give no further info on this.

From there, virtual agent started looping back on itself and there's no other options on screen.

Appreciate any ideas

Thanks!

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, lets Restore BIOS default settings:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.

  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.

  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.

  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.

  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, and then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?

  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

If the error message displays, proceed to the next step.

  1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer.

  2. Press the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  3. Turn on the computer and start pressing Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  4. When the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics menu displays, click Component Tests.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  5. In the Component Tests menu, click Hard Drive, and then click Quick Test.

  6. Click Run once.

Running the Hard Drive Quick Test

  7. The Hard Drive Quick Test begins. If the computer has more than one hard drive, select the drive you want to test. To test all the hard drives, select Test All Hard Drives.

When the test is complete, the screen displays the results. Test results are also available in the Test Logs on the main menu.

  8. If the hard drive passes the Quick Test, but a there is still a problem with the hard drive, run the Extensive Test. This test includes the SMART Check, Short DST, Optimized DST, and Long DST. To run these tests individually, select them from the Hard Drive Tests menu.

If the hard drive fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

If the test passes but the error message continues to display, proceed to the next step.

If the Hard Drive Test displays an error message and a warranty ID code, contact HP.

The customer service agent will ask you for the 24-digit code if they need to setup a repair or replace the hard drive.

If the Hard drive test passed and still getting error message, proceed to the next step.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
