Chrome OS

I followed the steps that Google suggested to recover the Chrome OS on my chromebook but after verifying the data on either USB stick that I've used, the chromebook goes to a black screen with a couple rows of blue dots, then reports "an unexpected error has occurred" after a minute or two.

Update: Attempts to contact support revealed that the product was both off of warranty (which makes sense--it died after near-exactly 53 months of ownership) and past its service life, so no support was able to be offered. While unfortunate, it did last 53 months, and that's an above-average lifespan for a laptop. Due to the lack of official support, it looks like my chromebook is well and truly dead here.

@Mlmiii,

Welcome to the Hp support forums and a good day to you. I see that you have posted for the first time and I will be privileged to share this space with you and assist you. Let us work as a team to figure things out here. Brilliant troubleshooting and an excellent diagnosis of the issue. Kudos to you for that.

  • Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
  • DId you Chromebook crash recently?

For now, try these steps:

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

The chromebook did occasionally throw up the "Crome OS is damaged" screen before, but I did not do anything about it then because it went away after restarting. Now, however, it shows up immediately after powering on, such that I cannot perform the diagnostics you mentioned.

The chromebook did crash on its last use before this problem started, and was on battery power at the time.

@Mlmiii,

I thank you for writing back to us. It has lasted you a good amount of time as the shelf life is about 3 years. What happens here is while new technologies are being developed old technologies tend to get phased out. So you could have encountered certain challenges here. I would suggest that you give it a shot contacting a technician locally.

Take care and thanks for your understanding. I hope things pan out great for you. Take care and have a blessed week ahead.

I have followed the Chrome Recovery Instructions and have tried multiple USB and SD card devices but I continue to get this error. Following a recommendation I found on a different forum, I extracted the logs from the recovery application file system.  Does anyone recognize the errors in these logs as indicating what the root issue is and what I can do to resolve my issue?
