Microsoft Windows 11

I have recently been experiencing some issues with my HP pavilion that is about 5 years old. My computer has been recently shutting itself off without an warning. After it shuts off it is unable to turn back on unless I connect it to its charger even though it still has a large amount of battery charge. I have run some of the HP diagnosistic tests on the computer, such as the battery and hardware, and both have passed. Please let me know if anyone has experienced a similar issue or if there's anything I can do.

Hi @dash90

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion is experiencing power-related issues despite passing diagnostic tests.

Here are simple and detailed steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn Off the Laptop:
    • Disconnect the charger and remove any external devices (e.g., USB drives).
  2. Drain Residual Power:
    • Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the Charger:
    • Plug the charger back in and try turning on the laptop.

Step 2: Check Battery Health

  1. Run Battery Calibration:
    • Open the HP Support Assistant and navigate to the "Battery Health" section.
    • Follow the instructions to calibrate the battery.
  2. Test Without the Battery:
    • If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it and try running the laptop directly on charger power.
    • If the laptop works fine without the battery, the battery might need replacement.

Step 3: Update BIOS

  1. Download BIOS Update:
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for your laptop model.
    • Download the latest BIOS update.
  2. Install the Update:
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the update. This can resolve power management issues.

Step 4: Check Power Adapter

  1. Inspect the Charger:
    • Ensure the charger is securely connected and not damaged.
    • Try using a different charger to rule out issues with the power adapter.
  2. Verify Power Outlet:
    • Plug the charger into a different wall outlet to ensure the outlet is functioning properly.

Step 5: Reset Power Settings

  1. Access Power Options:
    • Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options."
  2. Restore Default Settings:
    • Select "Balanced" power plan and click "Restore default settings for this plan."

Step 6: Check for Overheating

  1. Clean the Vents:
    • Use compressed air to clean the vents and ensure proper airflow.
  2. Monitor Temperatures:
    • Install software like HWMonitor to check CPU and GPU temperatures.
    • If overheating is detected, consider using a cooling pad.
