Hello,

I have an HP ProBook 6460b.

I forgot my BIOS password.
Virtualization is disabled and I cannot enable it.

Please guide me through the official BIOS recovery process.

Thank you.

Hi,

For an HP ProBook 6460b, if the system is asking for a BIOS administrator password, BIOS recovery will not remove or bypass that password.

BIOS recovery is intended for BIOS corruption or failed BIOS updates. It is not an official method to reset a forgotten BIOS password.

HP’s official position for business PCs is that HP cannot reset a lost or forgotten BIOS password. If the BIOS password is unknown, the official repair path is system board replacement:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_9535708-9536016-16

HP also documents that changing or managing the BIOS administrator password requires access to the current BIOS password:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_9127869-9127917-16

So unfortunately, without the correct BIOS administrator password, you will not be able to enable Virtualization Technology or change BIOS settings through a supported method.

My recommendation is:

  1. Contact the previous owner or organization that managed the laptop and ask for the BIOS administrator password.
  2. Contact HP Support with proof of ownership.
  3. If HP confirms it is required, system board replacement is the official supported option.

I would avoid unofficial BIOS password reset methods, as they may damage the system or violate security rules.
