HP 15-dy1031wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings,

I bought a new HP 15-dy1031wm 2 weeks ago. It has UEFI boot system. I spent two days trying to get it to boot into Windows 7 Home from a flash drive. I want to install 7 with 10 for a dual boot system. I enabled Legacy in the BIOS. It came in "S" mode but I disabled that.

For love nor money I can not get it to boot from the flash drive. I have tried everything I can come up with but still no boot. It gets  to the point where the little Windows 7 colored dots start spinning and then freezes.

What gives with this thing? I have never had problems like this booting from a flash drive. Can you offer some advice? I am at wit's end with this thing.

You need to enable booting from non-EFI devices. This option can be found in most BIOSs called the Compatibility Support Module or CSM. This option is sometimes hidden until you disable Secure Boot. I've also seen it hidden until Fast Boot is disabled. Once you enable the CSM module and set it to boot EFI + Legacy boot devices you shouldn't have any trouble booting your USB device.

Otherwise kindly check out the methods https://www.minitool.com/news/cant-boot-from-usb.html.

Thank you very much PiterGeek. I will give it a shot and see what happens.

Still not getting past the little dots. I am about ready to give up. This is a drag.

Hi Biff,

Sorry for not helping you. Make sure that your USB is using FAT32, and format it to FAT32 in case it isn’t.

Thanks PiterGeek,

I tried Fat32 and NTFS. I copied all the files from the Windows 7 DVD to the flash drive. I downloaded ISO from Microsoft and tried booting with that. Whatever I do, I get either no boot or it boots up to the colored Windows 7 dots and then freezes.

This is ridiculous. I am about ready to throw in the towel with this thing.
