@RaymondB37, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Before troubleshooting startup issues, remove or disconnect all discs and devices from the computer.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Remove any discs and USB devices.

  3. Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

  4. Disconnect all non-essential devices such as printers, scanners, external hard drives.

  5. Leave only the mouse, keyboard, and monitor connected.

After you have removed all discs and devices, turn on the computer.

  • If the computer starts, reconnect devices one at a time, to determine which disc or device is causing the problem. If the issue is solved, troubleshooting is complete.

  • If the computer still does not start and exhibits the same problem, press and hold the Power button to turn off the computer. Do not connect anything, and then continue troubleshooting.

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a Hard Reset.

After you have completed these steps, if the computer startup issue is resolved, go to HP PCs - Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update (Windows 10, 8, 7), and then go to HP PCs - Using HP Support Assistant (Windows) to update all device drivers.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.

  3. Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices, such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

  4. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

  5. Remove the battery from the battery compartment.

  6. Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.

  7. Put the battery back into its compartment and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.

  8. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

  9. On the Options screen, select Continue to open Windows 10.

  10. If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter.

  11. Reconnect each of the peripheral devices.

Try restoring the BIOS again. Refer to this video link for step-by-step instructions.

If the issue persists, try additional troubleshooting steps from this document.

Let me know the outcome.

Cheers 🙂

Thank you for your reply. I have tried all the things suggested and still no joy. Power up and after 30 secs or so caps lock flashes 2 times with 2 beeps and a black screen. Plugged an external monitor in also and no screen with this either.  I have unplugged the hard drive and it still does the same thing. Looks like a BIOS related motherboard problem. I cannot access the system at all so cannot restore the BIOS. I have also taken the memory module out and cleaned it but again no joy.

Thanks,RB
