HP Envy M4
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I'm not sure if anyone even has this *old* laptop but hopefully, someone can help.

I updated BIOS a couple days ago, and ever since, my HP Envy M4 laptop only shows a black screen when I turn on the power.

I've tried the windows+B or windows+V method, pressing esc, f11, connecting to another monitor, and even removing and reinserting cmos battery, but no luck.

The screen is COMPLETELY black (no light at all) but the screen itself was working just fine before this happened so I'm sure it's not the display problem. If anyone can help or even tell me of what's going on, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

@Joseph909 Oh! that may need a BIOS recovery, a possible interruption, not deliberate, however, a power failure or a slight disconnection from the internet while downloading the BIOS update, could cause such issues, nevertheless, we have a few steps that should help resolve the issue, once and for all:

Click here to perform a hard reset on your device

If the issue persists, after the above steps, try the below:

  1. Turn off the notebook.

  2. Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.

  3. With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key  and the B key at the same time.

       NOTE:

On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key  and the V key.

  4. While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key  and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

The HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the BIOS update begins automatically. This might take several minutes, and you might hear additional beeping sounds.

    • If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps. If the issue persists after repeating the steps, skip to the next step to Download a replacement BIOS file.

    • If the Power light turns off, the notebook has turned off because the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds only.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Hi, thank you for your reply. I tried the first method but it didn't work so I tried creating the recovery USB using sp66921.exe BIOS file. However, when I got to step 11, it didn't give me an option to create a recovery USB flash drive. it simply asked me where to save new files, so I saved the files in my USB. Then my computer froze so I thought I accidentally installed this BIOS on the computer instead of in my USB so I turned off and thankfully I was able to restart the computer with no problem.

Then I inserted the "recovery" USB into my laptop and tried following the remaining steps but nothing happened. I'm assuming the way I created the recovery USB wasn't correct since technically it's not a "recovery" USB, it's just a USB with some files saved on. Is there a way to create a working recovery USB when the software doesn't give you that option?

@Joseph909 If you've clicked on this link and followed the steps under - "Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive" and yet it didn't work, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

here's how private messages work: Click here for details.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
