HP Spectre Laptop Stuck in Reboot Loop After Auto Update

Hi @JeanDelaware,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand how stressful it is when your HP Spectre x360 gets stuck in a reboot loop after a Windows update, especially when you need your laptop for work or personal tasks. This issue often occurs due to BIOS conflicts, corrupted update files, or HP Sure Start recovery triggers.

Why This Happens

  • A recent Windows cumulative update or driver update may conflict with the BIOS.
  • HP Sure Start or Secure Boot may repeatedly attempt recovery.
  • Corrupted system files during update installation can cause endless restart loops.

Steps to Fix the Reboot Loop

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to clear temporary memory.
  • Reconnect the power and turn on the laptop.

2. Boot into Recovery Mode

  • Power on the laptop and interrupt the boot process 3 times (press and hold the power button when the Windows logo appears).
  • On the Recovery screen, select:
    • Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Repair.
    • If that fails, try System Restore to revert to a previous restore point.

3. Update BIOS

HP recommends updating the BIOS to resolve post-update boot issues:

  • Download the latest BIOS for your Spectre model from: 👉 Official HP® Support
  • Use HP Support Assistant or create a BIOS recovery USB if the system won’t boot normally.

4. Disable Automatic Restart

  • If you can access Safe Mode
    • Press Windows + R → type sysdm.cpl.
    • Go to Advanced → Startup and Recovery → Settings.
    • Uncheck Automatically restart to view error codes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
