Spectre x360 13-w023dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 2016 Spectre 360 no longer starts up. The battery charge indicator light doesn't illuminate when charging. I checked the power supply, and it's fine. Is this a dead motherboard, and if so, is there a fix? I've been reading in this forum that this is a known HP problem with the Spectre line.

Hi@Vividmin, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

We reviewed your post and I understand that the  Notebook is not Powering ON,

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps

Do you see a light at the place where the charger connects to the laptop? If yes then it indicates that the charger is all fine.

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.

F6 + Power Button

  • CMOS Rest ( combination of windows button and letter 'V' then push the power button ones and release the windows and letter 'V' after 5sec

If the laptop does not power on then please continue with the below steps:

  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery out.
  • Connect only the battery and check if the laptop powers on.
  • Likewise, remove the battery out (if removal battery ) and connect only the charger and check if that helps.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the reply. I tested the power supply with other devices and it works. However, the charge indicator light does not come on. Are you sure that following the steps you outlined will resolve the issue? I'm reluctant to open up the laptop unless you're certain that I'm not just dealing with a dead motherboard.

Hi@Vividmin,

As this is a hardware issue, I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

This is the same issue I'm having. Same model Spectre as the OP. I've tried multiple chargers and outlets, but the battery won't hold a charge and the computer won't turn on.

The computer is out of warranty, but this seems way too soon for it to die given it's premium price.

Can this be fixed?

I had the exact same problem.  March 2017 Spectre X360.  When plugged in, no battery charge indicator light.  No lights at all.  Press the power button, nothing happens.  I did the power reset or hard reset (I don't know what you call it) and nothing happened.  I was able to fix it by taking off the bottom cover and disconnecting the battery.  Then do the power reset  (with nothing plugged in).  Then reconnect the battery and put it back together.  If this doesn't fix it, it could be a different problem.  But this is the second time I have had this issue and I have realized that disconnecting the battery is key to fixing it.    (Power reset: with everything unplugged, press and hold power button for 15 seconds.)
