Hi @kyrsln ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

That is a common roadblock when trying to change boot settings on HP business laptops. Because the HP ProBook 640 G3 is a commercial/business-class machine, it employs very strict security measures, making BIOS password recovery much more difficult than on consumer models.

You are correct that you need to access the BIOS setup to enable or configure dual-booting (usually by disabling Secure Boot and/or enabling Legacy Support).

Here is the essential information and your only viable paths forward, as simple fixes like removing the CMOS battery will not work on this model.

The Challenge with HP ProBook BIOS Passwords

HP ProBooks and EliteBooks store the BIOS password in a specialized, non-volatile memory that cannot be cleared by removing the CMOS battery or draining residual power.

Due to HP's security policies and the rules of this support community, we cannot provide instructions or links to third-party tools or methods that attempt to bypass or subvert the security measures.

Your Two Official Options

The only officially supported and recommended methods to reset the BIOS password on your ProBook 640 G3 are:

1. Contact HP Technical Support Directly (Recommended)

HP is the only entity that can legally provide a unique, customized file necessary to clear the BIOS password.

  • Request an SMC.bin file: You will need to contact HP Business Notebook Support and explain that you have forgotten the BIOS Administrator password.

  • Proof of Ownership: HP will require you to provide proof of ownership (original receipt, invoice, or sometimes a warranty check) to verify that you are the legitimate owner of the laptop.

  • The Solution: If proof of ownership is accepted, HP will email you a small file (often named SMC.bin) and instructions. This file is placed on a USB drive and used during the boot process to reset the password to factory defaults.

2. Service/System Board Replacement

If the laptop is still under warranty, or if Option 1 fails, the last resort is to replace the system board (motherboard), which holds the locked BIOS chip. This is an expensive solution and usually only practical if other hardware has also failed.

Hope this helps solves your issue.
