Hi
When I boot my laptop it boots to my account desktop with no need to identify myself in any way - how can I get it to boot to a locked screen and have to sign on in the normal way
If I just sign out and lock the computer then everything is fine meaning it is on locked screen I have to choose the user and enter password or PIN.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is directly booting to the desktop screen without asking for the password.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.
Press the Windows and R keys on the keyboard to open the Run box and enter “netplwiz.” Press the Enter key. In the User Accounts window, select your account and check the box next to “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.” Click the Apply button. In the box that appears, type your password where prompted. Click the OK button.
Restart the computer. You should be asked for a password now to get into your Windows 10 PC.
