I'm trying to revive an old laptop that hasn't been powered up in 4 years. I don't know what it's symptoms were at that time.
The HP logo appears, along with "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu" and never progresses to load Windows.
Experiments on power up that I have tried so far:
- Press ESC. Results in "ESC...Pause Startup" then sits there forever
- Press F10 results in "F10...BIOS Setup Options" and stops there forever
- Hard Reset: Pull battery, held power key 10 seconds. No improvement
- Bios Restore - Hold Windows Key + B for a long time results in a beep after many seconds. Then let go, and "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu" appears but in a much larger text size, no HP logo in this case. No BIOS recovery screens showed up.
- Remove RTC battery, measures 2.9 volts. Wait a minute, plug in, results in a CMOS checksum error, restoring default CMOS settings. Then... back to same place, same symptoms as first two experiments above. Stuck there.
- Pull one RAM SIMM, try with either one in first slot, no improvements.
- Pull HDD, no improvement. Still won't display BIOS or Startup Menu.
Any other experiments to try? CPU seems to execute enough code to show HP logo and accept an F10 or ESC key, but gets stuck after that.
Thanks Jamie
