@Tara_11

Great! I'm very glad to hear that! Please let me know if any issues arise 🙂

Also, here is your HP Driver Page (for the Envy dv4-5243cl). The latest/recommended version of all your drivers for Windows 8 will always be on that page, even once your computer is out of warranty. (Caveat: Most consumer notebooks' support lives end at 5 years, so the latest versions will remain there. They just may not be updated after 5 years.)

The HP Support Assistant program will automatically search for updates and install them for you. HP Support Assistant comes pre-installed, but the user has to open it and set the update schedule preferences for it to start getting updates automatically. If you don't see it on your Start screen, you can download it from that HP Driver Page above.

How do i know which one of the updates from that page i need to download. When i click on scan for updates, it says "we were unable to verify your product" followed by "HP was unable to verify that you have this product, but did find other products. HP Envy DV4-5243cl notebook PC"

Thanks again for all your help!

I'll have to check into that error that it couldn't verify your product, but it is actually much easier (and usually considered better practice) to only look for driver updates when you're having an issue like you were with the touchpad. For instance, if after a year or two you're having an issue with, say, sound not playing correctly, then the first thing you'll want to do is open up Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > IDT HD Audio > Driver tab, and take a look at the version currently installed on your computer. Then go out to your Drive Page and see what the latest version listed is.  If you have an older version (a lesser number), then you'll want to download and install the later version. As a rule of thumb, if everything is working as it should be, technicians leave it as is 🙂

If you'd rather be proactive, though, that's perfectly alright. HP Support Assistant will keep you up-to-date. Just make sure you've got it installed. You'll see it on the Start screen in the HP section or you can press Windows key + Q and type 'HP' and it'll come up in the results. Open it and make sure the automatic update schedule and preferences are set. The computer will need to be on and not in sleep mode at the scheduled time for the update to occur. You can set it to just search for updates and you can choose which ones to install or you could also set it to check for, download and install all updates automatically. That part is up to you.

Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

Okay be sure to perform a hard reset to release the stored energy from the notebook. Perform this by:

1. unplugging all accessories and the power cord.
2. Turn the notebook over and make sure that it is turned off.
3. Remove the battery
4. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds which releases the energy
5. Re-insert the battery, plug in the charger and turn it on.

Could you also provide me with a model and product number of your notebook? So that I may look into this further to try and provide you with more helpful instructions.

Hi rogers586. Sorry to hear you are frustrated with the touch pad not working. What model of notebook do you have? Does the keyboard work when the mouse freezes (try pressing the Windows key to see if anything happens).

What version of Windows is installed?

I have an HP Pavilion g7-1317cl Notebook PC.  It is freezing and won't let me do anything.  It opens up to my desktop (but very slow).  But neither my mousepad nor my cursor will work  I have tried unplugging it, removing the battery, holding down power button for 10 seconds, and turning back on.  It still doesn't work.  Sometimes all it does is circle (blue circle).  How can I get it to work?
