HP 255 G8 Notebook PC (347S4AV)

hello community. since the latest bios update that i have done a few days ago i am having an issue, i am getting the following message everytime when start the device: there is an issue with trusted platform module (tpm) data // i then have the options to press y to delete whole tpm data (happens nothing if i press y) or n to boot with current one (starts normal)

i tried everything i could to fix this but the problem remains. i think it can only be fixed with a new bios update. but i am not sure if my device will get another one because its almost like 2 years old probably. what do you think will i get another bios update or not? and if you think i will get another one when can i expect it? for now i am having insyde f.37, the date that is added to it is 22 august 2023

processor installed is: amd ryzen 5 5500 u

note: bios rollback is no option

everything is set to activated regarding the tpm in bios

tpm can not be detected from windows, neither in device manager also not in any other area.

laptop works normal so far i can tell its just the annoying notification that bothers me by every start.

upgraded to windows 11 long time ago, this happened not during the upgrade.

here is what i already tried to fix it:

(i not care much about the not detected tpm by windows it would also be helpful to remove the notification only)

system recovery to a point where i did not have the problem
reset pc with all data
trying change the tpm settings in bios (in hope the notification will go away)
hp hardware diacnostics in multiple ways (all good according to hphd)
disable certain hp and windows programs in autostart
disable windows error report and related notifications
restore bios. (worked but issue remained)
sfc /scannow (also every possible available update even the optional ones)
trying to access tpm through windows security/device security (info security chip: no tpm available)
trying troubleshooting for security chip. just see a page with tpm infos set to not available. delete option is greyed out
trying to access tpm through windows key + r search: tpm.msc (device not found)
trying to clear tpm through powershell with admin rights entering Clear-Tpm (no compatible device found)
uninstall or update tpm drivers in device manager is also no option because its not showing up there

i also found in eventviewer the following message: (this is translated from another language to english)
An error occurred while checking the Virtualization-Based Security activation policy in Phase 6 with TPM 2.0 status: The TPM is not in the correct mode for an upgrade.

@lio123,

Welcome to our peer-to-peer HP Community Forum!

As per: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-amd..., your AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is a Windows 11 supported processor.  Had to look it up, just in case.

Anyway, have you tried to look in BIOS ("Security") to see if perchance your TPM is set to "Hidden" rather than "Active"?  This just happened to me recently when I tried to install W11 in a newly acquired HP Z2 Tower G5 Workstation, and I got the message that my processor is incompatible with Windows 11.  Since this was an i9-9900KF, I knew that was bullocks. This momentarily mystified me before I caught on.

Kind Regards,

hello @NonSequitur777 and thanks for the reply. yes i can confirm that the tpm is activated here is also a picture of the tpm settings. i am using the laptop already about a good year with windows 11. IMG20231015073854.jpgthe upgrade was not a problem. i never had any problems with tpm before. it started when i was doing the latest bios update. the notification came up while it was doing the bios update and when i was acctually expecting the bios update to be completed and to see my login screen i saw this notification instead.

Hello Lio123.

what was the solution to solve the problem?

@lio123,

I noticed that your TPM status was "Available", is there an "Active" option?

[EDIT:] Never mind: "TPM State" is "Enabled".

Kind Regards,

The problem described also occurs for me after the BIOS update. TPM is no longer present in my BIOS at all. The Windows Security Center also reports that there is no TPM.

here is how i could solve the problem. first you need to change the bios version to an older version that you had before and which worked good on your device.

note: doing this is at your own risk these are probably not the official steps to fix this problem, if you are not bothered too much about the tpm issue its maybe the best to just wait for a new bios update.

there are 2 options to do this:

option 1: you can do it through hp hardware diagnostics. install hphd, then restart your device, click f2 while its starting. chose firmware management, chose bios rollback. make sure its showing/chosing a diffrent version from the one you are having installed. execute. (before doing it read what i have write next to avoid problems.)

option 2: you can download it from the hp site. to do it go to this url: https://support.hp.com/drivers
add your device infos and version of windows. if the detect drivers process is not not working just enter serial number, you can find it on support assistant.

then there should be a section "+all drivers" expand it. there you should see a section "bios" open it. there you probably see the bios version you are already having.
click on it to expand it. (if you see 2 there with same name just use upper one, thats what i have done.)

in the info section you should see another expandable section called "previous version" expand this. then chose the one that fits your needs. if you have the same device like me (hp 255 g8 with win 11 home amd ryzen 5 5500u) i chosed f.35 released in march 2023.

so maybe thats all what you need to do and the problem might be already fixed at this point.

but by me was the problem after the previous bios version was installed and worked perfect, that after a restart the laptop installed again the damaged bios version with the tpm issue i could not stop it from doing it at first.

you can already tell after the first boot after new bios is installed if you will have this problem or not.

to find out, go to device manager and then check for firmware. if there is added a warning sign its very likely that you will have the problem as well.

the problem was by me that the installed firmware driver was still the one that i had on the damaged bios version and this caused a forced bios update back to the damaged one, in short to install another firmware driver solved my problem. now i am having one from june 2022 and the problem is gone.

to fix this  open the firmware tab in device manager, then right click by firmware to do a driver update. drivers were not available when search for it (by me) but there is an option called "search for drivers on my pc" do this, and then there is another option below called "let me pick from a list of drivers available on my pc" when i did this there were a few drivers available.

you can change the drivers within seconds, just chose one that is not too old and all should be good 🙂 after that the warning sign should be gone in device manager/firmware. if its still there try to change to another driver. you can then do a restart and test if all works. hope it helps 🙂

German telephone customer support solved the problem.
When the window appears at startup with the two options "Reset well TPM or Boot with current TPM-Data", then I had to press the letter "Z" on the German keyboard. On the English keyboard this will be the letter "Y". Just as it is displayed in the selection window. This causes the TPM module to be reset and then the computer works again without any problems.
