OK  I    done what you said   " Open the Command Prompt with Admin privileges and issue the command CHKDSK /X"   was it supposed to do anything  at the time   of   doing it ?   as it just   stayed  like that,  so I  clicked restart    and  it still switches off   then  just lies idle    with the power on light   displayed   but not  rebooting,   tried it twice   same thing,   I havent had time to look at the other link yet,  bit aprehensive after  what happened yesterday,  but I  will look later ,  cheers

CHKDSK /X does not do anything right away but schedules a disk check to happen at the next boot.

Might not work when the machine hangs at the shutdown phase. It should take a while at the next boot if it works.

Ok  I understand  that,  but  it is still not  restarting,     switches off and stays  like that   with the power on light  lit,  then I have to do  a forced  stop  and switch on again

First try the following:

Hit WinKey+R and type shutdown /s as the command. This should do a full shutdown istead of preparing for a Fast Startup.

If this does not help, try to run the msconfig in Safe Mode as follows (there have been some issues with msconfig options not always been saved otherwise)

1. Keep the Shift key down and select Restart

2. Select Troubleshoot in the Windows boot menu

3. Select Startup settings

4. Select restart

5. Select Enable safe mode with networking

6. After restarting open command prompt in admin mode and run msconfig

7. Make sure normal startup is selected

8. Restart the computer

9. Run the shutdown /s as above

10. check that you can shutdown normally

11. run the chkdsk

yes it does  shut  down  doing  that,  but  it  does shut down  completly   with the normal  shut down  button,  its  just the restart  that  doesn't  restart

Sorry, I should have read your reply more carefully, I originally missed the part that it is the restart that does not work.

What probably happens is that the boot phase of the restart fails because of some corruption in the system partition.

The information can be reinitialized using information from the Windows directory as follows:

1. Open the Command prompt in Admin mode

2  Issue the command bcdboot c:\windows

Try restarting and shutting down a few times and if everything works run the chkdsk /x as mentioned in earlier messages.

Should the bad turn into worse, you can run startup repair after booting from Windows 10 installation media USB  (that you should create on the Microsoft page if you have not already, 8GB or bigger USB required), but let's hope this will not be necessary.

that worked a treat  first time   cheers.      I have   2   programs   (  spotify  and Kies)   that  when  de-selected  at start  up   halves   my start up  time,  but  the    status on my   " msconfig"   then  alters   from >>>>  normal  start up.  to >>>

selective  start up.   which   obviously  makes  sense ,  thanks again  for you time and effort   it is appreciated

Great that you got that  sorted!

Take it as learning experience and now you have some tools if something similar should happen again.
