The laptop has 2 (out of 16) cores that regularly exceed 100° C. During this composition, the machine is sitting on a wood table, free of ventilation obsticals with other cores in the 62-74°C range. There are 3 cores that are above these temperatures, the 3rd one is in the 90°C range, not exceeding 94°C. But 2 cores keep flipping up past 100°. The machine is new and has already been returned once for a warranty cooling fan/heat exchange replacement. It would seem that the CPU is faulty now as well or am I being too cynical?

I am curious. I know there are no OS native tools that would provide that information.
What led you to try some third party utility to determine the core temperatures?
Does the laptop shut down?
I would not expect the temperature to run that high.
I do not know which processor your laptop has, but most would be triggered by a Delta T coding in the BIOS to shutdown the laptop at somewhere between 100-105C.

I have used a utility called "Core Temp" from Alcpu (Aurthur Libeman) for many years. Running it on another HP Spectre the lowest temperatures on this machine (antigua1) are 20°C higher than the other (barbados). Antigua is in the "tent" position with the vents all clear and pointed upward. The utilty will shutdown the machine, but even without it, the system has shutdown multiple times for thermal protection. The first time was due to a system fan failure. The system has been returned from HP after the fan was replaced. I fear that there was no system board testing and the processor has been ruined. Cores 9 & 10 are utually the first to overheat, but if the system runs long enough, all will record temperatures above 100°C

I would request that anther warranty repair be done, if the laptop is still shutting down.
