This laptop won't run on charger power alone (plugged in), without the battery installed (I think it should).  The new battery fully charges and the laptop runs until the battery is depleted and then shuts down abruptly.  Then, to use the laptop, I have to wait until the battery is charged for another cycle.  I just replaced the motherboard (the original one had firmware issues as well as this same power issue) and it still won't run when plugged in, without the battery inserted.  I think my next move is to replace the power connector cable to the motherboard; but I don't want to if this is normal behavior for this model.  I have never seen a laptop that won't run with just the charging cable plugged in and no battery.  Can anyone confirm that this model will run without the battery, connected only to its charger?

Any suggestions for further diagnosis?  Thanks, in advance.

Most modern laptops won't run without the battery installed.

It could be an OS issue if there is a new system board.

Windows key + X to invoke the menu where the Device Manager is.

Delete the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Battery Method device and the Microsoft AC adapter device in the Device Manager, then right click to  select and click on "scan for hardware changes".

The OS will reinstall the ACPI device.  Then restart the OS.

Erico,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I have a 2018 15-bw033wm laptop that powers up and runs without its battery installed, as it should (IMHO). To be clear, is this model (2016 15-ba013cl) considered a modern laptop and is that normal behavior for this particular model?  The battery charged to 100% overnight with the laptop off; but when running with the power cord plugged in, the battery is slowly running down.  It looks like the laptop will eventually have to be shut down to recharge.  We'll see if the charger can keep up with the power demands and still top off the battery enough to run the laptop for longer periods of time.

The new (used Ebay) motherboard seems to have solved the firmware issues and since my post, I have replaced a corrupted hard drive with a solid state drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10.  I was able to do the entire installation without a crash (with the battery installed).  I'm now in the process of installing more Windows updates and configuring the machine.

I didn't yet uninstall/reinstall the ACPI devices due to the fresh copy of Windows.  The laptop seems to be stable now and has not crashed since the new drive and Windows were installed.  We'll see how that goes...

Thanks again for your help.
