Trying to update my hard drive in a 2018 pavilion laptop from sata1 to sata 3. Will it work?

According to the parts list for your notebook, it came with a 1 TB 2.5" SATA III (6.0 GB/S) mechanical hard drive.

I recommend that if you want more speed out of the 2.5" drive, replace it with a 1 TB SSD such as this:
