The recall was in 2008 for a one month period. But that dosen't matter since we purchased years after the recall. So we didn't even get a shot at it. If this dosen't get resolved the way it should, I'm  contacting any and every consumer protection agency I can find. Imagine that, a recalled problem still going strong  9 years later!

This is AWFUL. I have reached out to the HP forums multiple times with exact same issues, and have rec'd a cookie-cutter response from their "support team moderator" with my complaints, and told that someone would be contacting me to help resolve my issues. BUT not only did I have to follow up with THEM (should've been the other way around), they did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about my ongoing broken hinge situation. And it got worse -- the broken hinge caused the casing to separate, and then the casing problem did something to the fan! 😞 Back to the forums I went - and surprisingly (well, NOW - not really), there were MANY people with the exact same problem, including this causing damage to the fan, AND by the way, ultimately a full non-functioning ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR computer!! And I am heated b/c my issue was WAY after this supposed very brief recall I saw online back in 2009. But the kicker is, I didn't even have my laptop then!! ....so they most definitely DID NOT correct the problem. The worst of it - they are bold-faced lying sheisters. Upon my final dealing with their "SUPPORT team" (BAHAHAHAHA!) they offered zero solutions, and LIED saying this was not a "known issue" or had no recalls, so there was nothing they could do. As I pressed him for SOME semblance of a solution , he said I could send it in for repairs but I would be charged full price. UGH!!!! I have a $1000 fairly new computer - that does nothing, but collect dust now. Won't even power up b/c of a warning about the fan malfunction, shuts itself down. And the ginaormous cherry on top of this "HP SUCKS" sundae??....after I grudgingly agreed (with no other options) to send it in for repairs, he THEN informed me, "Oh wait - looks like we don't even have those parts anymore. We can't even repair it for you at all." This is not an old computer!! At all!! And it was an expensive one considering it's "just" a notebook! But if a class action lawsuit happens at some point, I will definitely join in the fight against HP!!!!
NEVER again HP. NEVER.
And I am sharing your lack of care for your customers (as well as sincere warnings about your defective products) with everyone I know, and in every possible public forum related to the issue. I am furious. Don't even know where to turn next.

I, too, have fallen victim to the notoriously deteriorating hinges on my Envy.  I started hearing pieces of plastic being knocked around by the cooling fan inside, the hinges becoming loose, then I started getting fan and over-heating errors.  (When it kept overheating and not booting up, a computer nerd friend told me to remove the battery, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, reinstall the battery and try booting up again.  It worked.)  I am a DIYer and decided to take it apart to see what was going on inside (there are several hidden screws you have to find in order to get the backside off). The plastic hinge housing was breaking apart, some of the nuts were missing because there was no more plastic to hold them in place, and there were pieces in the fan keeping it from turning.  I gently knocked all the loose parts out of the laptop and the fan started turning again.  I took some slightly larger screws from my toolbox and used them to hold the hinges in place.  That's all it took for that time.  Now, about 6 months later, the hinge on the left near the cooling fan has become loose again.  This time, there is nothing affecting the fan, thank goodness.  I will be reopening the laptop again tonight and seeing where I could glue/anchor the hinges to this time around.  Hopefully, I can find some way to jimmy this thing into lasting a year or two longer.

Just a quick restatement of a contribution to this thread I made about a year ago.

I too had the infamous crappy HP laptop construction. It broke about a year and a half after purchase and HP gave the same copy paste answer as they have everyone else, so I fixed it myself. It has now been longer sincy my fix than it lasted to begin with, and no indication of getting loose again.

The key here is to fix the main problrem which is that along with a terrible design using crappy materials, the hinges are way too tight. When you take the remaingi screws out of the hinges, you will probably find that one is way tighter than the other. Whether or not that is your case, both should be able to be moved by hand without extreme effort.

Problem is... to loosen the hinges, you have to remove a couple of covers which are held in place by two screws which are not visible. To get to those, you have to remove the touchscreen, and to remove that, you not only have to gently pry apart, but there are a couple of scrws at the lower corners which you can't see unless you gently pry the covers at the corners. There is actually a small triangular cover on the lower corners held in place with medium tack glue. Just peel them off and you will see the screws. Remove tha touchscreen and you will see the screws holding the hinge covers. Remove the covers and you will see that the hinge tension is controled by a nut. Just loosen it a bit.

Just don't loosen the hinge too much or it won't hold up the screen. Trial and error unless you noticed like me that one was way tighter. I just loosened the less tight one a  slight bit and then looseed the tight one to match.

Good luck and like me... buy Dell (or anyone else) next time and tell HP to take their crap to the dump.

When I started this thread, I was neck deep in frustration - a 1200$ laptop falling apart.

Many people who forked out money for these Envies were so betrayed -- and given the run around, but like I stated earlier I got many of those - the "Sorry your laptop is out of warranty", "Sorry you are using a US model laptop in Uganda", "Sorry you did not buy this laptop in this region so we can not help", "Sorry. We can repair it but are you willing to pay ~200 €?"... In the end, I got a free repair - the entire housing was replaced, they insisted they had to swap my 16GB RAM for 8GB..

At 16GB of RAM, 2TB of SSD disk (thanks to 2 hard disk bays) and an i7 processor, the performance of this computer is quite unrivalled but I relegated it to a desk computer in my Room - some kind of entertainment server that I never dare close, because then I would have to reopen it and who knows what might happen...

2 Laptops down the road, Dell has its driver issues, Mac is Mac but I am much happier.

All am saying is - If you Push HP enough, they will repair that PC or replace it - I know because I was in Uganda recently and a computer trader showed me boxes of computers that said something along the lines of "refurbished" or "refab" -- taken from complainers and resold to unsuspecting buyers who will probably end up on this thread..
