To give an update, HP sent me a box, took my laptop for repair and after 6 weeks, they have returned it. Atleast they kept me informed of delays. From what I can tell they replaced the entire body - apart from the back of the screen, unless they craftily transferred all my stickers.
As a bonus I also got a backlit keyboard - a much needed feature for dark room coding. They even fixed a diagonal crack that was appearing in the screen frame above the beatsaudio logo.
The laptop now feels more firm and is back to being usable. Hope restored. Apart from 8GB RAM (Discarded my 2 8GB chips, replaced them with 2 4GB Chips - they said the RAM was faulty) and a few weeks lost, this seems like a really good repair job, but old habits die hard, I find myself clamping the left corner with my thumb and index finger everytime i open the laptop.
Kudos HP!

I have the same issue too but it's on the right side and the opening is like 5-8cm. I don't know how to fix it and my laptop's warranty just expired last month. I'm looking forward for a positive response.
I think we can file a class action lawsuit here if there are lots of us experiencing the same common problem. Not unless hp's willing to replace the part for free and without any hassle just like what apple did to their defective macbooks.

Hello HP,
I am deeply concerned - I bought a 17" HP envy but less than a year since
, the laptop is coming apart at the bottom near the Hinge for the screen to the left. I am afraid to open it because it makes a "pop" sound every time I open the screen.
God knows I have been extra careful with this laptop. Yopu will not find a scratch on it from bangs or things like that but am deeply scared of this 1200$ piece falling apart not even a year into my using it.
Can someone please advise where to repair this from?? I am based in Uganda but will be travelling to San Francisco and Los Angeles soon.
Please advise, am beginning to lose faith in the machine, and brand..

I have a pavillion dv7 notebook with the same hinge problem and with the occasional beeping sound and locking up. Today I turned it on and the keyboard Is dead-no response. This is the 2nd pavillion notebook I have purchased. I had the locking up problems with the first one and had no support help with it. Dummy me bought this one and now here I am again. I'm responding with my cell phone trying to fix it.

I'm having the exact same problem. First I noticed a screw missing. Then started hearing something jingling around, which it turns out was the part the screw screwed into. Then the hinge started popping every time I open the laptop. It's gotten to the point where it is now happening on both sides, but primarily the left. Normally it can be popped back together, but sometimes it doesn't work. Looking through the forums this seems to happen to hundreds if not thousands of these models.
