HP Notebook 17z

My laptop's case is badly cracked around both hinges. The laptop has not been dropped.

My laptop is out of warranty, and the only options the contact page gives me are this forum, finding a local service center, or paying(!) to call support.

Edit to add:

Thanks to @Erico I was able to identify and purchase the correct replacement part. As it turned out, I needed the black mesh finish, not the jet black finish, but the answer was otherwise correct. The following Youtube videos were great helps in doing the actual maintenance:

It was a huge pain and took a few hours, but I was successful and now have a properly working laptop again.

Thanks! The product number give very specific product information including the color.

You will need the jet black top cover. It comes complete with touchpad and keyboard. I see it on eBay for cheap. Check out the search I did for the top cover.

Hi @Nazrax ,

Hinges generally break more from excess pressure put on them, inadvertently or not than from a notebook being dropped.

It is unfortunate, but more notebooks than not, have their hinges cracked by inadvertent customer, or owner induced pressure when opening a notebook beyond the design amount or by carrying a notebook by its display.

For that reason, most manufacturers deny hinge breakage under factory free warranty, except for the extreme warranty coverage provided by a paid warranty.

The only way to resolve the issue will be out of pocket (yours). The labor for the repair provided by a laptop shop or

yourself if you are technically inclined. If you would like part information, it will require that you identify your notebook in more than just general terms. Once you have done that we will do our best to help you identify the parts required to repair your notebook. Otherwise a laptop shop can do that for you as part of the repair cost.

"Too much stress?" This is a massive design flaw! We've had laptops from Dell and Lenovo and those have lasted for years and years and never developed any issues like this; and this laptop is about 18 months old and now we can't close the lid for fear of ripping it apart when we open it again!

It's a 17z-ca100 CTO .

Can you provide specific location of the damage?

Is it on the upper part of the notebook's enclosure?

The hyperlink below is an HP PartSurfer result for your notebook series.

So, that corner finally broke off completely, and I think the problem is deeper - I think the hinge detached from the bottom of the case and that's why the top of the case broke.

In that case, it may be time to either purchase the lowerpart of the notebook's enclosure or source another laptop.

I suggest the x360 style. That is what I own and the hinge isn't an issue.
