I started the Windows 22H2 update ( on my HP Spectre X360 15t-eb100) via windows update and it failed to complete properly and has left my computer unusable. Normal boot takes a long time and eventually ends with blue screen error of 0xc000001. When it tries to boot to recovery partition (F11), It also takes a while and results in another blue sceeen with error of DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG. I am unable to access the internal SSD drive to recover some files. I have tried to use Media creation tool to go into recovery and all options fail ( uninstall previous update, fix boot, etc.).
How can I access the internal SSD to recover files before just trying to reinstall windows from usb drive. I do not want to format internal drive before trying to recover the data. I have the bitlocker recovery keys, but unfortunately do not have bare metal recovery backup.
Any ideas?

Hello @JamesB-Hou
Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... I would like to help you.
(1) Power on notebook
When seeing the Windows logo press and hold <power> button to power off notebook !
- Repeat this procedure at least 3 times to get into <Windows Recovery Environment>
(2) Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore
- Click Next when the System Restore widget opens.
- In the pop-up window, you may see the restore points you have created. Choose the most recently created one and click Next to continue.
- You are asked to confirm the restore point. If everything is OK, click Finish to start the restoration operation.

I cannot get into the Windows recovery environment. That is where I get the DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG error when booting into that env. If I get to this via booting from usb windows media, I get error message “To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore.”
Any other ideas?

Hello @JamesB-Hou
<Windows Recovery Environment> is "outside" of Windows operating system, try again.
If you see the Windows logo for a very short moment, turn off the notebook as described. Repeat this a least 3 times. On 4th boot you will get into the Recovery Environment.

As I said, I have tried and get the Blue screen with error of DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG when in recovery env. If booting from usb media, there is no O/S avail, since it cannot see the internal SSD.
I really appreciate your assistance, but any other suggestions?

Hello @JamesB-Hou
(1) Please reinstall your operating system !
You need (another Windows computer) to prepare bootable <USB flash drive>
An unused or empty USB flash drive with at least 32 GB storage capacity is required.

Hello @JamesB-Hou
(1) To backup your personal data use [ Ubuntu 22.04 ] live linux distro booting from <USB flash drive>
(2) If you are 100% sure that you have backed up everything, proceed with HP Cloud Recovery.
(3) If you are overwhelmed with this, have a computer expert do it.
(4) If (1) does not work, you should remove the SSD and replace it with a new one. Have a computer expert back up the old SSD with the important data.
Kind regards
