HP pavilion

My hp got stuck on an automatic repair screen after taking a knock and freezing completely. I forced shut down but now it won’t switch on past the automatic repair screen. When I ran a test of the system it failed the short DST for the hard drive, throwing the error code UAN7J0-7B7A99-MFPV7F-60RG03

I don’t have it under warranty anymore, and more importantly I don’t want to lose all my photos etc. is there anything I can do? What’s even wrong with it?

Hi:

Below is the failure code report generated by the code you posted, minus your notebook's serial number.

Failure Information
Failure ID Tag Checksum HP Serial Number Test Date Failure Code Device Includes Error Message
UAN7J0-7B7A99-MFPV7F-60RG03OKXXXXXXXXXX10/23/20303StorageFloppy Drive, Hard Drive, Memory Drive, Optical Drive, SCSI, Tape DriveHard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure

You will need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

Generally you won't be able to recover any files but you can invest a few quid at the problem and buy a SATA to USB cable.

After you remove the drive, plug one end into a working PC's USB port, and the other end into the the failed drive and see if you can read/copy any files from the failed drive to the PC.

Something like this...
