I need a new cooling fan in my notebook and I find there are 3 and 4 pin fans available. i tried the part search from HP and none of the replacement fans list that particuliar part number. It's not available from HP. How do I figure out if I need a 3 pin or 4 pin fan? Thanks

Try Newegg:

Or Amazon:

Hi,
It is going to have 4 pins (4 wires). Anyway, if you look on page 80 of service manual you can see the part number of fan and steps to replace part number 680551-001
You need to search with part number and you should be able to find quite easily:
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=680551-001
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=680551-001&_sacat=0
Service manual:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03593126
Remember to remove and replace thermal paste between chips and heatsink with quality thermal paste such as Arctic MX4 or similar. You can remove old paste with lint-free cloth and alcohool. Any dried paste youcan remove by scraping with soft plastic tool.
Let me know if you need any further help,
David
