Reporting back in: I received a replacement laptop, same 840 G2, from my employer after the jack broke on the first one.
Just a few weeks later now and I used the jack perhaps 5 times or so and it is broken on this new laptop.
This is a junk design!
I took some pictures that show how that little flap is stretched/stressed when a plug is in it. How could that possibly last?

In our organisation have a lot of Elitebook 840 too and no such problem till now but 2 of 8 last received G3s have a broken jack just few days after purchasing. I think that quality of the jack depends from origin and some suppliers make bad quality parts. HP must revises its contracts but not to oblige customers to pay so much.

@BrokenRJ45Door wrote:Hi,
My door has also broken - I have an 840 G1. Very poor quality.
On looking up the parts for my serial number, it comes up with a plastic parts pack for £30 but it says only for Elitebook 745. This pack includes various parts as well as the just the RJ45 door & spring I need.
Can someone confirm the 745 and 840 G1 are the same shape/chassis etc. so these parts will fit? Also does the new part just clip in or will I be looking at chassis disassembly first?
PS Alot of collegues seem to be having problems with the screens on these laptops getting dead lines of pixels. Is this also common?
Do you have success? Can you say spare part number of this pack?
P.S. I looked for this plastic pack and anywhere where I found it (SPN: 21175-001), it includes only fake SD and fingerprint reader.

For G2 SPN is 779684-001 and it's about 72 EUR. Because we have more G3s with this problem I looked for their spare part- it's 821662-001 and price is 70 EUR. But it's much more simple (just cover) and I can't understand why the price is so high!? It's like wheel rims for cars- if it's for Mercedes the price is triple the same rim for Opel 😞

The company I work for has 840 G1s through G3 and we have seen this happen many times. I recently had 2 which were fixed under warranty, but one of these has issues with this already again. We are now looking at alternative vendors to supply hardware. I tried ordering the kits for the G1 and G2s but couldnt find them at a sensible price. This really is bad as we have been an HP site for many years and it will be sad if this is one of the contributary factors that causes us to move to Dell.

We have approximate 150 new HP Elitebooks used by our Homecare staff. The staff have to come into the office to install updates connected to the network. We have had instances where it is almost impossible to remove the Network cable from the Lan port. Staff have brought laptops in for maintenance after trying to release the cable, the Lan port plastic snapped off. I have almost broke one myself in trying to remove a cable. I have to wonder how they passed QA?

Yeah no kidding. And not just once, but I believe they're up to 840 G4 (generation 4). Mine is the G2. I assume the G4's have the same problem. For certain, there are G1 - G3 users on this thread. I could be wrong about G4, I would like to think HP has fixed it, but I don't have any faith in them to do it. I believe each iteration comes out a year apart, so that's 3 (at least), or 4 (likely) years of failing to fix this. Perhaps if they fix it, they acknowledge the problem, and then they have to do a recall or something...?

Btw, I've just gotten to the point where I carry around a USB NIC in my backpack everywhere I go. I literally have it with me always, EXCEPT when I need it. I think the 3 or 4 times I've needed it were the 3 or 4 times it wasn't in my backpack. **bleep**en HP...
