I would hope my subject title is all encomposing enough for anyone with a related issue to find this thread.  Sooo, here's the problem:

My AC Adapter/charger/Power brick makes a ticking sound all the time unless I plug it into my laptop when it is under 100%. Under all other conditions, it makes a ticking sound. I am unable to leave it to plugged into the outlet when my laptop is fully charged without it making a ticking sound.

And the ticking sound persists even if I unplug the charger from the laptop. Looks like the charger has a problem when it has nothing to charge.

Anyone has any insight into this? Is this bad for my laptop or charger? Whenever I try to talk to hp online support, they want to mess up my BIOS and remove and uninstall things when my laptop is in perfect condition.

I went through a lot of laptops to find 1 that works and I really don't want them to mess up any of my settings just to try and fix an accessory that came with the laptop. Does it make any sense for them to remote access my laptop and play around with it to fix my adapter?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Hi! @Firefury54, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand that AC adapter is making a clicking noise.

Please try few steps recommended below.

With the AC adapter connected, look for the AC adapter light close to the AC adapter port of the notebook computer. If the AC adapter light is on, then the AC adapter is functioning properly. Proceed to the next step.
If the AC adapter light is off, then the AC Adapter may be failing or the system board is damaged and requires repair. Contact HP Customer Support for further assistance.
Perform an AC Adapter UEFI test by using the following steps.
Make sure the power cord and adapter is connected to the system and wall outlet.
Turn on the computer.
When the HP logo or boot menu is displayed, press F2 before the notebook boots to Windows.
Once in the UEFI menu,    select component tests.
Select the AC Adapter test.
If the AC Adapter test is not available, update the UEFI version.
If the test result is PASS, there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter. Do not replace it.
If the test result is FAIL, record the unique 24-digit failure ID code before replacing the AC adapter (failure ID code will not be displayed unless the adapter is plugged in).

If the HP AC adapter is defective and the computer is under warranty, contact HP Customer Support (this is when the 24-digit failure code might be useful). If the computer is no longer under warranty, see Ordering HP Certified Replacement Parts.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot AC adapter issues.

Please keep me updated.

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

It passed. Why does it make the ticking noise then? Is it okay to leave my laptop plugged in at all times despite that sound?

@Firefury54, Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for trying out the steps.

AC Power adapters do emit high-frequency sounds (15 kHz-20 kHz) that may be misunderstood as hissing or crackling noise. This is normal and not an indication of a failing adapter.
The temperature of the adapter also may feel warm to the touch. This is normal operation too.

Refer this document from HP for more information.

Hope this helps!

Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂

I just purchased an all in one HP 24-r0xx.  It the power supply has load ticking sound.  This is not a hissing or 15 to 20 khz sound.  I cannot get through to any of HPs support contacts to report this problem and get a new addapter.  So I am tring to post here to see what to do.  I don't believe this is a normal sound for a power addpater as I have had many adpaters before an never heard this ticking noise.
