Older laptop. Battery only charges when laptop is powered off and AC adaptor is connected and it will then charge to 100%. When powered on with AC adaptor connected, laptop runs on battery only; battery usages shows battery percentage decline and eventually battery will be exhausted and system shuts down. Laptop will NOT run if battery removed and AC adaptor only is connected. All drivers and OS have been updated and are current. So, not sure what to do next? Any thoughts?? Thanks for the help!!!

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
Your HP Notebook - 15-bs020wm (2DV78UA) according to: https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=2DV78UA,
is fitted with this HP battery part number: 919700-850 ("Battery 3C 31Whr 2.8Ah LI JC04") and this HP charger: 741553-850 ("Smart AC power adapter (45 watt) - 4.5mm barrel connector, non-power factor correcting (NFPC) - Requires separate 3-wire AC power cord with C5 connector")
From what you described, both your battery and charger could be defective and would like to retire/be replaced.
A quality replacement battery and charger can be purchased online, such as these examples (battery): https://www.amazon.com/NinjaBatt-919700-850-15-BS015DX-15-BS020WM-15-BW011DX/dp/B084HJNC3M/ref=sr_1_...
Hope this was helpful.
