My charger gets very hot. It's uncomfortable to hold in the hand, and it smells hot. It's worse, if I am both charging, and using the laptop at the same time. It's 45W
Bought directly from HP it's only a few weeks old, it came with the laptop.

Hi @Hunter1Can,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A very hot AC adapter can be concerning and potentially dangerous. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and address the issue.
Check for Dust and Blockages
- Ensure that the charger vents are not blocked or clogged with dust. Blockages can prevent proper ventilation and cause the adapter to overheat.
Inspect the Charger
- Examine the charger for any visible damage, such as frayed wires or cracks. Damaged chargers can overheat and pose safety risks.
Use a Different Outlet
- Try plugging the charger into a different power outlet to see if the overheating persists. Sometimes, issues with the power source can cause overheating.
Test Without Usage
- Charge the laptop without using it to see if the adapter still gets very hot. If it does not overheat when the laptop is not in use, the laptop's power demand may be contributing to the issue.
Update Drivers and BIOS
- Ensure that all your laptop's drivers and BIOS are up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can address power management issues that might be causing the charger to overheat.
Use a Higher Wattage Charger
- Using a charger with a higher wattage can help distribute the power demand more effectively. Check your laptop's specifications and consider using a 65W or 90W charger if it is compatible.
Check for Software Issues
- Perform a virus scan and ensure no background applications are consuming excessive power, which might be causing the laptop to draw more power and overheat the adapter.
Cooling Pad
- Using a cooling pad for your laptop can help reduce overall heat generation, which might indirectly reduce the load on the charger.
Replace the Charger
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider replacing the charger. Using an HP-approved replacement is recommended to ensure compatibility and safety.
By following these steps, you can diagnose and address the overheating issue with your HP 15.6 Inch Laptop PC's 45W AC adapter.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4, thanks for responding.
This is a new charger, literally days old, bought direct from HP.
I have updated all the drivers as you suggested,
I was wondering if the 45 Watt charger was undersized, or if I was shipped the wrong one?
If I don't let the battery get too depleted, it's less of an issue, but you are supposed to use it correct?
Charging the battery with the computer off, it gets warm, but not as hot.
