Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey everyone,

So I was just looking at the maintenance and service guide  for a laptop I recently bought and I stumbled across the dual storage configurations. This made me wonder if I could add a second SSD to the laptop and migrate windows to it while still keeping the original HDD as a storage device. Could anyone clarify about this for me?

Many thanks

Charlie

Start on p. 36 of the Manual here:

So the picture above shows the laptop with an M.2 "gumstick" disk installed. Yours will have an empty slot there. The slot can accept an NVME 2280 form factor M.2 disk like the Samsung 970 Evo:

We can help you with moving Windows over to the "gumstick" disk, leaving the original 1 TB HDD for storage.

You do need to open the back and look for the slot before buying any upgrade parts. I am about 98.5% sure your model has the slot, but sometimes laptops that in theory should have it do not.

Thanks for the fast reply Huffer,

I will have a look under the back panel of the laptop sometime later but in the meantime I do have one more question. It does seem a little bit weird in my head but the question is that is a 250gb ssd like the one you suggested compatible because in the manual it says that the storage amount for the SSD is to be 256gb.

Many thanks

You can use any size you wish...manufacturers set aside different sized parts of SSDs for system usage so you will see 240, 250 and 256 and then 480, 500 and 512 and then 960 and 1 TB and they are functionally the same. The Manual only catalogues the way HP shipped them from the factory it does not limit what will work. 250 is as small as I recommend going and if you can find it in your budget get a 500 or 1 TB .

Ah okay I think i'm getting it. Im guessing from what you said is that what the manual specifys is what HP ships them with and if that's the case then i'm probably going to stretch for a 500gb. I'll either probably reply to this post again or open a new one once I need to migrate windows.
