HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 (9Q8Z1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a 17-CP3005DX and I want to change my keyboard to a backlit keyboard.  Part # for my non-backlit keyboard is N39375-001 (TOP COVER NSV WITH KB SGY US).  I've found a possible backlit keyboard and the description is "Top Cover Upper Case Palmrest with US backlight keyboard for HP 17-CP 17-CN N39376-001 Silver".  In this description where it says it's for a HP 17-CP does that really mean it's for all HP 17-CPs, including mine?  The replacement part # is one digit off, a 6 instead of a 5 on the original non-backlit keyboard.  In a way I guess it seems like the correct replacement part #, but I'm a little skeptical.  HP PartSurfer has N39376-001 TOP COVER NSV WITH KB SGY BL US...the BL for BackLit I guess???

Thanks for any help with this!

Hi @PhreakyPhillip1,

Welcome to the HP support community.

You're correct in noting the difference between N39375-001 (your current non-backlit keyboard) and N39376-001, which is listed as a backlit version. And yes, in HP’s part naming, “BL” typically refers to “Backlit.”

While both part numbers are extremely similar, not all HP 17-CP series devices are wired to support backlit keyboards, even if the physical part fits. Some motherboards don’t have the connector or power line for the backlight function to work.

To give you an accurate answer, we’ll need your PC's Serial Number. So please do reach us via Private Message.

Please help us with your HP unit serial number or the product number in a private message for further assistance.

I know all about motherboards not having connectors...with my previous laptop everything I checked said I could add a M.2 SSD...only until I bought one and opened up my laptop did I discover there was no connector there for the SSD...I saw the holes in the motherboard and where it said M.2 but that was as close as I got lol

Hi @PhreakyPhillip1,

Thank you for providing the requested details.

We checked the information shared, and the record identifies an HP EliteBook 840 14-inch G11 Notebook PC (8M4X3AV) rather than the HP Laptop 17-cp3005dx mentioned in your original post. Because the displayed product does not match the notebook in question, we cannot use that record to confirm part compatibility.

Although N39376-001 is described as a backlit top-cover assembly, this does not confirm that it is compatible with every HP 17-cp configuration. The notebook must also have the required system-board connector and support for the keyboard-backlight cable. The one-digit difference between N39375-001 and N39376-001 alone is not sufficient to confirm compatibility.

We recommend taking the notebook to an HP Authorized Service Center. The service team can physically inspect the system-board connections, verify the notebook’s exact configuration, and confirm whether the backlit top-cover assembly can be installed before you purchase the part.
