Omen 16 c0000

I want to add another SSD storage drive

https://eu.crucial.com/ssd/p3-plus/ct2000p3pssd8

Should I get the Gen 3 or Gen 4?

i.e. which is compatible with my machine? I know they backwards compatible, but I'd rather just buy whatever works without spending extra for something not technically compatible.

Is the Omen 16 c0000 compatible with Gen 4 SSD's as per the link?

Or just Gen 3?

Hi:

Your notebook's PCIe NVMe slot is Generation 3.0.

You can install a PCIe Gen 4 SSD, but it will only run at the max read/write speed the PCIe Gen 3 slot allows.

Here are the specs for your notebook's processor.  Since notebook processors are integral parts of the motherboard, you can look up the PCIe connectivity specs by looking up your notebook's processor specs.

I selected the most powerful processor HP offered in the 16-c0000 model series.

What that link says, "zen 3".

I assume that's pseudo for "gen 3"?

PCI Express® Version
PCIe® 3.0

3.0 refers to "gen 3.0" - ?

System Memory Type
DDR4 - Up to 3200MHz
LPDDR4 - Up to 4266MHz

And DDR4 refers to transfer rate, aka read speed?
What is LPDDR4?

Zen 3 is the AMD trade name for that model processor.

Has nothing to do with the PCIe version.

Zen 3 - Wikipedia

That is correct.   3.0 refers to "PCIe gen 3.0"

LPDDR4 (LP=Low Power) is memory that is soldered the motherboard.

DDR4 vs LPDDR4x RAM: What's the difference? - Tech Centurion

DDR4 has different transfer speed rates from 1866 MHz to 3200 MHz.

DDR4-3200 memory is used in your notebook which is as fast as your notebook's processor can run the memory at.

Just to check also:

https://eu.crucial.com/ssd/p3/ct2000p3ssd8

This SSD drive would meet the max capability of my processor?

And there would be no additional benefit from getting/using,

https://eu.crucial.com/ssd/p3-plus/ct2000p3pssd8

This SSD drive?

(I think it's just gen 3 versus gen 4, but could be mistaken?)

HP Recommended

You are correct on both counts.

However, for the 10 euros more, you could transfer the PCIe Gen 4 SSD to a newer model notebook in the future that has a PCIe Gen 4 SSD slot.

That's up to you.

You've been very helpful, excellent answers.

Going to run one more question by you, unsure if you can comment on it?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/fanxiang-S500-Pro-Internal-Compatible/dp/B0BCQS37R7/ref=sr_1_11?crid=2OQCKO...

In place of the crucial brand of SSD drive which came recommended, this is substantially cheaper.

In your opinion/experience, would there be any advantage in buying the more expensive Crucial SSD drive in place of this more cost effective, lesser known brand?

The read/write speeds seem identical re Gen 3 versus Gen 4, etc.

I've never dealt with SSD drives before so am unsure of the do's and don'ts.

HP Recommended

I've never heard of that brand, but it appears to have excellent read/write specs for the price.

You can compare the specs on that model with the popular WD Blue SN570 2 TB NVMe drive.

Personally, I would go with the WD Blue since it is a well known and popular drive.

WD Blue SN570 2TB High-Performance M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, with up to 3500MB/s read speed : Amazon.co.uk:...

I'm thinking the WD Blue drive also comes with a 5-year warranty as opposed to the 3-year warranty on the fanxiang S500.

HP Recommended

I checked the WD blue drive, seems to be well reviewed.

In terms of compatibility, it mentions specifically "desktop" on the amazon advert, can one assume it's laptop compatible also?

Is there any way to know for sure it's compatible with my Omen 16 c0000?

A few of the Q&A's mention users have found it incompatible with HP laptops?

HP Recommended

I know the drive will work in a notebook.

Whether or not it is guaranteed to work in yours, that I do not know.

No do I know if the Crucial or fanxiang S500 would be guaranteed to work.

Also, some folks think their notebooks support NVMe SSD's but only support SATA M.2 SSD's, so did the reviewers install the WD BLue SN570 in a notebook that can't support a NVMe SSD?

That would be the only reason that I know of why the WD Blue SN570 NVMe SSD wouldn't work in a HP notebook.
