I am getting conflicting information as to whether my specific computer can be upgraded. It has a 57GB drive which is almost completely eaten up by system files. Some posts say I can add a second drive, others say I cannot. How do I know what is the case with my specific laptop?

Below is the link to the service manual.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP 14 Laptop PC

From what you are describing, your notebook must be one of those that comes with a 64 GB eMMC drive.

That is basically a flash media drive and is not upgradable.

If your notebook has a M.2 SSD slot, then it may support a M.2 SATA SSD, but I'm not sure.

If there is no slot, then there is nothing you can do to increase the internal storage.

In some of those notebooks that come with a 64 GB drive, the M.2 slot is disabled and I cannot find any other discussions related to that model series that has the eMMC drive where someone has tried to install a M.2 SATA SSD.

So, if you want to try a M.2 SATA SSD in the M.2 slot, make sure you can return it if it doesn't work.

I recommend one of the Western Digital Blue SA510 M.2 SATA SSD's.

Thanks for the info. Since there is no way to get a definitive answer on my specific unit, it seems that trying it with the ability to return the unit if it doesn't work is the way to go. I appreciate your fast response.

You're very welcome.

If you go ahead with the SATA M.2 SSD upgrade, please let us know if it worked.

This is the 500 GB model of the drive I recommend you try, unless you want a 1 TB model:

I will do that.

In one of the other posts about this, I saw that there was a cable and a bracket that also needed to be purchased. Is that your understanding as well, or should the drive just slide right in?

I looked up the product number you posted in the HP part surfer website and all the specific models that fall under that general model series product number have this motherboard:

HP PartSurfer

N00827-601
MOTHERBOARD UMACelN412064GeMMCHP WINDOWS

Here is a photo of an eBay listing for that motherboard part number:

OEM Genuine HP 14” 14-DQ0051DX Intel Celeron N4120 1.1GHz 64GB Motherboard | eBay

The M.2 SSD slot is missing as you can see on the bottom left side of the photo.

Assuming the slot was there, where does the other end of the M.2 2280 drive screw down?

The motherboard seems to be cut off because 80 mm from where the place is for the M.2 slot, there should be a standoff to fasten the other end of the M.2 SSD.

If you look at the service manual, chapter 3, there are no parts to add a M.2 SSD slot.

Taking all of this into consideration, I don't see that you can do any upgrades to the drive in your notebook.

So, assuming this is what I will find, are there any other ways to increase the storage size? I use this as a TV in my kitchen so I only have browsers installed. With only 4.89 GB left on the drive, things run pretty slowly.

HP Recommended

The only other thing you can do would be to use a SD card to hold files.

I have a HP notebook with a 64 GB eMMC drive and I have about 20 GB of free space.

I use this free utility that does a great job getting rid of junk files.

Wise Disk Cleaner - Free Disk Cleanup and Defrag Tool (wisecleaner.com)

I use it weekly in addition to running the Windows disk cleanup utility>cleanup system files.

HP Recommended

Well, that got me to 6.27GB so that's an improvement. Thanks for all the help!

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

When I run the Wise Disk Cleaner, I check the box to include both the regular and advanced cleaning option.

I also use the 'system slimming' option to delete files.
