Hi. I currently have a 512 SSD and no regular HDD. I would like to add an additional 1 TB SSD but when opening the computer I don’t see an obvious bay for it. There is a bay which looks like either an optical drive bay or a 9.5 mm HDD bay. What do I need in order to insert an extra SS?

Thanks!

A warm welcome to HP forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

If the 512 SSD is connected to the M2 slot then you can connect another SSD to the normal HDD slot. However, you would need a 2.5 inch sata SSD to connect to the normal HDD slot.

Refer to page 39 from this document to locate the HDD slot.

Thank you for your reply. I have seen that manual before but the interior of my laptop looks completely different than what they describe in the manual. For example, the battery is internal and there is no optical drive. Furthermore the existing SSD is not clearly visible - but I think it's the one in the bottom left corner of this picture. I can only see 3 M2 screws and if I attempt to lift he circuit board off, the metal bars you see on the top and right side, prevents me from doing so. Finally there is no obvious place to connect the wire from an additional SSD. From that perspective, the manual is useless.

Not to worry, you don't need to remove the 512 SDD in order to connect the new Sata SSD. The the 512 SSD is located on the left side and the Sata hard drive slot is on the right side. Please look at the image below.

Thank you for the picture. I bought the rubber brackets (HP part # 181124-00013 ) and the SATA cable (HP part # 181120-00043 ). Unfortunately, the cable is too short. There is no way it can reach to the port, unless there is another hidden port somewhere I can't see. Please advise.IMG_1087.jpg

As you mentioned you would like to add a secondary SSD to your laptop.

Please share the product number and the serial number of your laptop through a private message, so I can check the specifications of your laptop and assist you better.

According to the product details you have shared the product was shipped with 1TB SATA hard drive and 128MB M.2 SSD.

Click Here to know more information about the product specifications.

So, If you would like to add a secondary SSD to your PC. You need to remove the optical drive and connect the secondary SSD.

However, To place the secondary SSD on your PC you need a hard drive caddy to be installed on your PC.

You can check the one from amazon website for more information about the hard drive caddy. Click Here

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care! 🙂
