I have an HP Laptop Model 17-cp2033dx and it automatically installs BIOS updates without asking (right in the middle me working). I need to find out how I can set that to happen when choose and maybe also to just give me messages (preferrably by email). But whatever I like to have a full battery charge and not have anything else running before I start BIOS update. I do not like having such things jump out no where.

Thanks for the detailed response.

We understand your concern regarding BIOS updates starting automatically on your HP Laptop model 17‑cp2033dx. Based on your description, the update likely came through either HP Support Assistant or Windows Update, both of which can deliver firmware updates.

To ensure you have control over when these updates occur, here are the steps you can follow:

HP Support Assistant Settings

  1. Open the HP App (previously HP Smart).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under Automatic Updates, change the option to Notify me instead of Install automatically.
    – This ensures you receive a prompt before any BIOS or driver update begins.

Windows Update Settings

  1. Go to Start → Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options.
  2. Review if firmware updates are being delivered through Windows Update.
  3. You can set Active Hours so updates do not interrupt your work, or temporarily pause updates if needed.

Manual BIOS Updates
If you prefer full control, you can download and install BIOS updates manually:

  1. Visit the official HP Drivers & Support page for your model: HP 17‑cp2033dx Drivers & Downloads
  2. Locate the BIOS section, download the latest update, and install it when your device is fully charged and idle.

This way, you can decide the timing, ensure the battery is charged, and avoid interruptions during your work.

Hi @R_W_B,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how it must feel to have a BIOS update start right in the middle of your work.

Could you please confirm which version of Windows you’re currently running (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?

Do you recall if the updates are coming through HP Support Assistant or directly through Windows Update?

Here are a few  steps you can try in the meantime:

  • HP Support Assistant Settings:
    • Open HP Support Assistant → Go to Settings → Look for Automatic Updates.
    • You can change it to Notify me instead of Install automatically. This way, you’ll get a message before updates start.
  • Windows Update Settings:
    • Go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options.
    • Check if firmware/BIOS updates are being pushed through Windows Update. If so, you can pause updates or set Active Hours so updates don’t interrupt your work.
  • Manual BIOS Updates:
    • You can always download BIOS updates directly from the HP Drivers & Support page for your model and install them manually when you’re ready.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, I will try to answer your questions.

It's a new purchased device running Windows 11.    I don't recall for sure if was HP or Microsoft, but I've done both in the past and it looked more like a firmware Update, except that's always been a downloaded file in the past.

It didn't last long though maybe 3 to 4 minutes continuous with a reboot. But non of reboot warnings like Windows and screens looked different. I've owned Asus, Acer, other HPs but never seen anything happen without warning like this.

I looked but I could not find any settings in Windows or Bios that seemed to have anything to do with an Auto Flash of Bios. I honestly don't know what happened but it took total control of the device.

The Laptop is for my wife but I've had so much hassle with Microsoft's default apps and settings on the device that I've decided to do a clean install soon when I get time. I didn't get any apps setup on it so guess I won't loose that much with a clean install.

My Secure Boot UEFI CA 2023 hasn't yet got past UEFICA2023Status = InProgress. But HP Updates has done two Bios Version updates on my HP Laptop in the past week and it's currently at BIOS Insyde ver F.19, 11/26/2024. However I heard that some laptops need to have their secure boot keys reset from within BIOS (on bootup F10).
I've looked in my BIOS and didn't see anything that said "Reset Secure Boot Keys", but I haven't given it a Password yet so it might be behind that.
Does anyone know if HP requires this secure boot key reset from within BIOS before UEFICA2023 can be updated to BIOS, either via Windows Updates OR HP Updates?

And where in BIOS that might be?

Hi @R_W_B

Thank you for sharing the details.

By design, consumer PCs have limited BIOS options, and advanced features such as “Reset Secure Boot Keys” are not exposed in the BIOS interface.

Here are the recommended steps you can follow to verify and manage Secure Boot keys:

1. Access BIOS Setup

  • Power on the laptop and immediately press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to the Security or Boot Options tab.

2. Secure Boot Configuration

  • Ensure Secure Boot is enabled.
  • If the option to “Restore Factory Keys” or “Install Default Keys” is available, select it. This action reloads the HP‑provided secure boot keys.
  • On HP consumer PCs, this option may only appear after setting a BIOS administrator password.

3. Save and Exit

  • Save changes and exit BIOS.
  • Allow the system to restart and verify if the UEFICA2023 status progresses.

4. BIOS Updates

This ensures updates are applied correctly and securely.

Important Note: Advanced BIOS options are disabled on HP consumer PCs, so if you do not see “Reset Secure Boot Keys,” the system is already managing the keys internally.

By following these steps, you can confirm the Secure Boot configuration and allow the UEFICA2023 update process to complete as designed.
