my pavilion laptop dv7-6c95dx BIOS outdated. having trouble getting updates for windows updates.

So - step by step - indicate exactly what you did and what the response was.  Saying "it did not work" is not helpful.

Indicating which BIOS version is already installed would also be helpful.  Some setups will not go directly to a new BIOS if there is an important version that needs to be installed first.  I do not know about yours because, at the time, it did not seem to be a process that was needed, but now I need to see all aspects to get to the bottom of this.
